Darryn Turbocharged December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 This is really very sad to see.. no doubt there are many causes and exacerbating circumstances - from too much alcohol, to too many people in the area, to poor social graces, to lack of other entertainment options and more. There's a few things to bear in mind - despite this being huge by Singapore standards, and a real wakeup call for everybody - by international standards a 400 person riot that is contained within an hour is really small potatoes. Also, "clamping down" is going to be part of the solution (things like restricting alcohol, stronger discouragement against public drunkeness, reducing the crowd), to combat this we must do more than become stricter - a part of the solution is also to provide more options and freedoms, more things to do and better treatment in general. I would not doubt that part of the problem is the lack of facilities and poor living conditions in the dorms....there is little else to do other than go to Little India and congregate with friends. This is also human nature though. One thing that I think will be very important is that we don't start becoming xenophobic over this - the solution will be many faceted, but "whacking" and "isolation" won't be the solution. ↡ Advertisement

CupcakeOfDoom 1st Gear December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 http://sg.news.yahoo.com/no-excuse-for-such-violent-behaviour--pm-lee-on-little-india-riot-192643661.html Our PM has spoken. According to the news, he urge us to stay clam and that they will 'deal with them with the full force of the law'. ----------------- Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong condemned the rare riot that broke out in Singapore's Little India district late Sunday night, saying there was "no excuse" for the incident."Whatever events may have sparked the rioting, there is no excuse for such violent, destructive, and criminal behaviour," Lee said in a post on his Facebook page at nearly 3am Monday."We will spare no effort to identify the culprits and deal with them with the full force of the law," he added.Saying it was a grave incident, he noted that several police officers were injured and vehicles were damaged or destroyed. He added that the situation was now under control and investigations were underway."I urge all Singaporeans to stay calm. Do send the Police any information, photos or videos of the incident that you may have. I also wish the injured officers a full and speedy recovery," he said.According to police, the rioting broke out after a fatal traffic accident involving a bus occurred at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road at 9:23pm Sunday. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that paramedics who arrived in the area saw a man trapped under the bus. They pronounced him dead at the scene. Projectiles were then thrown at rescuers who were trying to extricate the body using hydraulic equipment.A total of 18 people, including four of its personnel, were sent to hospital and nine SCDF vehicles were damaged as a result, SCDF said. Myxilplix Turbocharged December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 I'm guessing there is some gang involvement/instigation here coupled with alcohol-fuelled emotions. It's no big secret that there are gangs comprising of/relating to foreign workers around and from what I've heard there's always stuff going down at little india, particularly on weekends, just that the general public does not hear about it because it involves the foreign workers. Whatever happens in the back alleys stays in the back alleys. I'm sure the same goes for all the foreign enclaves and I'm also pretty sure SPF is already talking to their contacts within the indian/banglah gangs to identify those involved. Some heads need to roll to keep the general public assuaged. I guess this does throw up the interesting issue about foreigners and foreign gangs, the languages involved. Makes communication and obtaining information that much more difficult. Tamil and to an extent Hindi would still be ok as there are SPF officers who speak these, but how many members of SPF speak Bengali, Thai, Burmese, Tagalog, etc?
Baal Supersonic December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 these bangala is needed cos no locals want to do the jobs here....it is those PMET FTs should be going home... Agree that PME should addressed first since its the urgent issue that hits locally born & bled hardest. But construction sector also needs to be relooked. Evillusion Supersonic December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 The one who "Junked" me, you are and inmatured. Go and dig out both the incidents and read.... I was at the scene in Hougang incident and right in the middle of missiles throwing (bricks, stones, iron rods, wooden pranks, ... etc.) and trying to separate both the Thai & S. Korean workers fighting at the construction sites. After an hours or so, the incident at Hougang had spreaded over to Jalan Eunos and another fight broke out there between Thai & S Korean..... feel for u bro....the ohe who junked you may not be in sg long...so doesnt know what happenef in the 80s and 90s or maybe they werent even born yet! They are a few riots that were never reported....like the sikh/india clash and others. Not reported doesnt mean it did not happen!

Qpik Supercharged December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 Actually, i totally agree with your suggestions.. however, they are not practical in implementation. When i was at little india, i am always force to walk on the road.. because there there is limited walking space in the pathment.. shops put their good outside the shop.. And if the place is crowded.. you can hardly sequeeze pass the ppl.. that's if you want sequeeze through a sweaty crowd. So, it not practically to ask these FW to stay off the street.. Secondly, how do you want to punish them for jaywalking.? FINE them ? or put them in jail ? send them back because of jaywalking.. ha ha ha .. not practical either.. As for alcoholic as mentioned above, its impossible selling/buying of booze.. they can always buy form them bugis area before heading down to little india to drink. Ban the drinking of alchol, same reason as above.. how do you intend to punish them ? I just tot that.. we are just as bad as our MP if we start to plan in our ivory towers.. and not see how practical is the implementation. ShepherdPie, got to give credits to Turboflat4 for original suggestions. I do agree with you on the limited width on the path. But, jaywalking is totally different. They do not obey the rules, just cross whenever it is convenient but then we are sometimes guilty. I guess the problems of jaywalking is compounded when herd of them crosses even when there are oncoming vehicles, very often forcing vehicles to slow down and this is not restricted to certain spots but rather a long stretch of roads like what we see in Geylang with alot of China nationals crossing the roads and standing on the road markings. jaywalking should be taken seriously and education instead of penalty would be a good start. I called for banning of consumption of alcoholic drinks in public places. do it in places with license or private venue. cos there are no ways one can ban purchase as it is readily available from convenience stores. unless it is outlaw then another grp of pple will protest. Baal Supersonic December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 i like your answer.. everything can be engineered.. i believe our government just engineered a riot.. ha ha ha .. :P like you say.. they are paid so much.. they need to be god.. can control everything. erm.....it was an unintended effect ? though every country will have some degree of social engineering. Its just a matter of how much & pervasive it is...

Baal Supersonic December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 If construction worker here is paid their those in other 1st world countries, many locals may take up. Its due to immensely depressed wages for labour jobs that locals don't want to take. As for price of land used for public housing, till today, even after many people/parties ask, the answer has been more than grey. Thanks again IB/Mgt. Maxus-MIFA9 Supersonic December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 The incident in 1984 of which I had was the best experience of my life and never to be forgotten. Of which, I learned a lots of thing and how to stay calm in situation so as to keep one mindset free to think of solutions instead of making it worst. Wearing those uniform and standing in the middle of any riots is not a 'bed of roses' as what many had suggested of ramming them down with vehicles. Situation changes within seconds and you have no time to think. The only way is to control our emotion and will only use force in the very last seconds when one life is threaten with death. If forces were to be used, it will angered the rioters more and the fighting will not end within hours and more death will occur & propetries destroyed. It had been so peaceful since 1984 riots and most of the 'Ang Chia' regulars had retired by now and this hands on experience cannot be passed down to the new generations 'Ang Chia' by teaching during classroom lesson. Rest assured, this group of 'Ang Chia' personnel will come out triump with their experience and they will be better officers when handling the next situation. One won't learn anything with 'mock' rioters in training. ↡ Advertisement
