Voodooman Supersonic November 27, 2013 Share November 27, 2013 Lousy food, won't be missed. Give me hawker center anytime, can the government please build a few hawker centers in or near downtown, food court prices in these areas are getting out of hand. ↡ Advertisement
Voodooman Supersonic November 27, 2013 Share November 27, 2013 Junked you on this one. What is real halal food style? Halal has nothing to do with culinary influence. Its just for the Muslims to enjoy other cuisines that is not so readily available as Halal. In sg as one bro pointed out, also adds a platform for group meetups with a need for halal food without sacrificing cuisine type. As for lack of taste, well to each his own. Banquet's failure is just a case of mismanaging expansion and cash flow. I sort of agree with playtime, I never got used to the halal Chinese food served at Banquet, so I avoid as much as possible, unless I have Muslim friends joining me, hence Playtime is not wrong to question the business strategy. The concept may serve a social purpose but for people who take their hawker fare a little more seriously, banquet food really CMI. No meant to offend anyone, just talking about a business plan that limits your own customer base. Maybe it works best in areas with lots of Muslim residents but may also work as a niche play. Anyway, it looks like all food court players are going halal, so I might be wrong.

If the concept has not been proven in the small number of selected outlets, why are they expanding so fast? apparently they over-estimate themselves. Gitanic 6th Gear November 27, 2013 Share November 27, 2013 foodcourt notion shd be abolished. bring back hawker centers. money in foodcourt go to too many parties, not to the food & cooks or chefs in more professional term.

Knoobie Supercharged November 27, 2013 Share November 27, 2013 What about " Ah mei " cafe? Is under Banquet too right? Also close shop? Ah Mei all close shop from all over the place.. Actually, I quite miss the ban mian with chicken meat at the banquet at arcade last time.. also the ah mei nasi bryani.. the fried chicken so shiok!! Junked you on this one. I sarpork! like mee goreng, got chinese, indian and malay style!! fried rice also!! may looks similar on the surface but is actually quite unique on its own. malay chicken rice also nice!! c'mon.. where's the kampong spirit!! Lousy food, won't be missed. Give me hawker center anytime, can the government please build a few hawker centers in or near downtown, food court prices in these areas are getting out of hand. I rather they "forgotten" about these hawker center then trying to "upgrade" them every time. Every upgrade, sure got some good food never come back...

Its just that his view on halal food is slightly off in his post. Halal food does not necessarily mean Malay food. Its not wrong to say halal Chinese food would pale in comparison to the originals.

Knoobie Supercharged November 27, 2013 Share November 27, 2013 i think the kampong spirit apply in street side coffee shop, not in air conditioned shopping mall selling at 2x the price well.. coffee shop is starting to be a dying trend also.. so if that eventually vanish, does that mean we should forego our kampong spirit? anyway, to me a food court is just another "glorified" version of coffee shop... food often tastes lousier but charge so much higher.. Banquet's failure is just a case of mismanaging expansion and cash flow. Think you missed my intention. Look at say.. Discovery Food Channel, when they visit Muslim countries, the Halal food is so much more than what banquet do, or what we are used to seeing here, I'd pay to eat there. In fact, when i holidayed in Turkey, their food was very very nice too. If bandquet wanted an entire food court Halal, then they could (and should) have done soooo much better and made a tonne of money. If they cannot attract non-muslims (meaning majority chinese here by default), their big food court concept is dead to begin with. its a failed business plan... proven now. Thats cos people were willing to try a few times in the beginning.... then they gave it a miss. (Same as me) That look of "success" was actually first timers visiting them. Once the pool of first timers were finished... the business is done.

Ok now that you rephrased it this way. Turkey is not comparing apple to apple since it is a muslim country. Actually, I realized only the hawkers and buffets are surviving in SG. Didu Turbocharged November 28, 2013 Share November 28, 2013 Coffee's not bad at Banquet though. Maybe its kopi-o is ok. But kopi-c definitely thumbs-down for me. Probably the type of evaporated milk they used. Somehow, it just taste weird. Remember they have a Ah Mei outlet at AMK mall during my 1st visit there many years ago. There was a queue for the nasi briyani. My kids used to enjoy Banquet's chicken chop dish at Simei Mall after their tuition class. Those were the days.
