Minister insists Singapore PM’s flights costlier than Putrajaya’s jets
The Malay Mail OnlineThe Malay Mail Online – Tue, Nov 19, 2013
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim today sought to fend off allegations of excess in Putrajaya’s use of private jets, claiming it would cost more to follow Singapore’s choice to charter flights for government leaders.
Saying that Pakatan Rakyat lawmakers were misguided in praising Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for choosing travel on a commercial airliner on his way to a recent summit, the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said the flight was chartered and could not be considered commercial.
“They say the Singapore PM uses a commercial flight; that’s not true. If you look at the summit at the airport you see his plane parked with the rest. That means he chartered the plane and not fly on a commercial flight like what is claimed.
“To charter the plane is more expensive than to use your own plane,” he told a press conference in Parliament here.
Yesterday, PR lawmakers were up in arms over the cost to maintain the government jet ACJ319, the private aircraft used to fly the prime minister and other government officials, much like the Air Force One in the US.
On October 3, it was disclosed in Parliament that Putrajaya spends RM28.8 million in annual rental and RM5.5 million to maintain the jet.
On top of that, as much as RM44 million in taxpayers’ funds were used to fund the prime minister’s overseas travel since 2008.
The revelation came amid Putrajaya’s call for the Malaysian public to adapt to subsidy withdrawals as the government aims to trim its ballooning debt.
Opposition MPs have branded the call hypocritical, accusing government leaders of living lavishly as seen from their hefty allowances and huge monthly pay.
But Shahidan claimed it was wrong to assume that there was abuse in the use of the private jet or in the prime minister’s travel expenses, and called on detractors to “repent”.
“It’s not nice to make such allegations. There was never any power abuse in this case... so I advise those who exploit this issue to repent. Repent before god makes you repent,” he said.

some time reading what the MY minister say can really make you tear [laugh][laugh]

i believe charter the flight (dabao) could be more expensive than flying on your own private jet per trip

just like driving is cheaper compare to take taxi ... in terms of per trip

but overall cost is much much cheaper la ... RM5.5M to maintain the jet annually ... this one is not money ar?

just like car ... renting a car ... in terms of per trip is expensive for shortime usage

however total cost is much cheaper than owning the car if you don't drive (or in this case fly) all the time

a private jet parking there is every seconds losing $$$ ... asset depreciate and operating cost escalate

somemore dabao SQ ... biz go to SQ ... profit go to SQ ... and who is the biggest shareholder? [thumbsup]

MY minister argument and logic is always [whip][shakehead][thumbsdown][sly]

sometime they do on normal commercial flight.

but i guess if there is a big group of people to follow him to a summit, they would rather chartered a plane.

A lot of airports got VVVIP access for VVVIP. They don't even need to see anyone at all. So can be done one.

I was on the same flight as PM Lee on his recent trip to Vietnam. Security was very tight, 100% checks on all passengers. Then as expected, he sits up front in biz class. On arrival at Hanoi, the plane detour to another area to "drop" him off first before proceeding to the aerobridge.

He not wrong. He only say flying private jet is cheaper. Didn't mention overrall cost. Politician talk at its best.

Timing is the factor. U cannot expect lhl to wait at airport for 2 hour doing nothing.

Actually I was wondering. Who want to travel with him?? So troublesome.. 100% check and many other thing. Flight likely have to delay for him to board and alight from plane.

In 1992, 1st.May. I was in a delegate trip to Suzhou with Ex-President and PM, 3 stout bodyguards at each passage ways to block off passengers and crews towards first class cabin.

There is no chance for assassination to happen beside suicide bombing attacks.

Those crews who are assigned by the security guards are nowhere to be seen until we 36 participants alighted from the SQ Jumbo Jet.

This particular flight to Shanghai Hong Qiao Airport were my safest in lifetime.
