tanbk 4th Gear November 14, 2013 Share November 14, 2013 GM to move international headquarters to Singapore from China Reuters Wednesday, Nov 13, 2013 General Motors Co (GM.N) said on Wednesday it would move its international operations headquarters to Singapore from Shanghai in the second quarter of 2014. The automaker said it would have about 120 employees in Singapore, who would oversee "key parts" of the company's business in the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, the Middle East and Chevrolet and Cadillac Europe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does it mean that we will start to have more Chevrolets on the roads? ↡ Advertisement

Kangadrool Supersonic November 14, 2013 Share November 14, 2013 HQ moved from Shanghai, China to Singapore probably means: - it's very expensive to upkeep it in China, costs very high, higher than Singapore - taxation aren't as favourable as Singapore, which welcomes them with not only low taxes, but also tax holidays/exemption/special low rates. - difficulty to get permits for foreigners/expats to work there and personal taxation for expats is too high, unlike here. Hmmmm, I do see a similar trend from my side and other MNCs around.
Penn1 November 15, 2013 Share November 15, 2013 I think the tax structure plays a big part in GM decision to move their HQ here
Baal Supersonic November 19, 2013 Share November 19, 2013 Well if TD is going to be the next big thing in SG, will GM moving here translate to cost savings for Chevvy cars?
Ichibawa 5th Gear November 19, 2013 Share November 19, 2013 Moving their HQ here doesn't translate to cheaper GM cars.
Kangadrool Supersonic November 19, 2013 Share November 19, 2013 (edited) Moving their HQ here doesn't translate to cheaper GM cars. Yup, it also doesn't mean the presence of their cars here will increase. GM used to have a HQ here 10 years ago, but sales of GM cars are few. Singapore is just a red dot; there's no significant market within. What HQ/HO does is to support the greater areas from Singapore due to our "open floodgate" policy. Reckon tax incentives is on the top and also the ability to staff without much restrictions. Not only GM, there are many MNCs also moving their "expats" from various countries to Singapore as they are having difficulty in securing employment pass/permits in other SEAO/AP countries.
