By Audrey Dermawan | [email protected]
CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Three people died while another is missing following a mud flood in Bertam Valley here this morning.
The dead have been identified as Bangladeshi Md Jahangir Alam Fazlor Rahman, in his 30s, and Indonesian Kesmat, 46.
Another deceased has been identified as Tan Tuck Choi, 51, who died on the way to the Sultanah Hajah Kalsom Hospital in Tanah Rata, due to a heart attack.
Meanwhile, Ho Kin Way, 38, has been rushed to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment after he injured himself while making his escape.
Cameron Highlands police chief Deputy Superintendent Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the search and rescue team was still looking for a 17-year-old Indonesian girl.
He said the incident happened at 1am when water from the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam in Ringlet was released after it breached the danger level.
"As a result of that, the water overflowed into at least 80 houses, some 3km away from the dam.
"Some 10 kongsi houses located along the banks of Sungai Bertam were totally destroyed," he told reporters here.
Also affected was SJK© Lembah Bertam, which was closed for the day.
Some 100 vehicles were also damaged in the incident.
At 2pm, the Cameron Highlands district council was still cleaning up the mess.

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Three people were killed and five others were injured after heavy rains caused flash floods and a landslide at Cameron Highlands on Wednesday night (Nov 5).
The body of a 13-year-old boy, R Punesh, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kampung Raja, and an Indonesian vegetable farm worker, Anipan, 48, were found at 8.45am and 9.20am respectively on Thursday . A Nepalese vegetable farm worker, Md Yousuf Miya, 66, was found buried in Jalan Ulu Merah, Ringlet at 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Cameron Highlands district police chief, DSP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu confirmed that to date, three people were killed while five others were injured in the 6.30pm incident on Wednesday. He said the body of the student was found by a security team and villagers about five kilometres from where he drowned in Sungai Telom, Kuala Terla in Kampung Raja.
Meanwhile, Anipan's body was found buried under a metre of earth. "The victim is believed to have failed in his attempt to escape from the landslide," Wan Mohd Zahari said. He added that during the incident, Anipan's wife, known as Tsunami, 41, managed to escape and was unhurt, and the landslide also buried the kongsi house occupied by the couple.

According to the district police chief, the flash floods affected 203 people from 47 families in Kampung Baru and Bertam Valley, with 20 houses and 20 vehicles damaged. "The management of the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam had announced to the police about releasing water via Sungai Bertam when the water level reached 35.9 feet (11 metres) due to heavy rain. To avoid any untoward incident, the residents were evacuated to the community hall in Ringlet and the operation was completed at 8pm. At the moment, the situation is under control and the weather is fine,” he said.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Morni Mamat said the disaster in Ringlet also forced the evacuation of 150 residents from 37 families to a multi-purpose hall in the small town, located about 10 kilometres from Tanah Rata, the main town in the highland.
Last year, Ringlet Lake in Bertam Valley at Cameron Highlands overflowed, causing a mud flood, killing four people and damaging more than 100 houses.
Meanwhile, Cameron Highlands police chief DSP Wan Mohd Zahari said water from the Sultan Abu Bakar dam was released in stages since Wednesday afternoon and residents were ordered to move to higher ground for their safety.

Deforestation definitely increase the risk of mudslide and our climate change increases risk of flash floods.

Poor victims. Hope they didn't suffer.

Lucky me!

I was actually at Cameron from 29th Oct - 1st Nov. On my way down (took the Tapah route), there were multiple mini-landslides that blocked one lane liao.

Plus, it rained. Every. Single. Day.

V unfortunate for the locals. At times like this, be thankful for what you have and where you live.

I was just visiting CH 4 days prior to this happening, and it was raining every afternoon at CH, and the slopes all looked very bare and the roads had runoff mud too - a disaster waiting to happen.
