How are you defining "a few"?

 

there's a LOT of bands around that have been famous for much longer than that...

Sure, there's also a lot that faded as one hit wonders as well...

but how about people like the Stones, ACDC, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, UB40, Crowded House, ......there's tonnes and tonnes that you could name that are still famous

When I say "few", I don't mean few literally as in few by the countable fingers on your hands. What I mean is relative to the number of acts in the market. Most of the acts you mentioned are classic acts which true they are popular by over a decade or more. However, there are many many times more of various other acts who are just popular for a period of 5 yrs and no more or worse still, only popular for one or two albums (I can name you many of such acts). I think acts that are popular for over a decade or more probably constitute less than 10% of pop/rock acts who are popular before (am not referring to one hit wonders who are not selling well but only had 1 or 2 big hits on their album once).

 

I have a feeling people like Lady Gaga may just gradually fade off from the music scene in another 2-3 yrs time.
