It's not really eugenics. More of socio-economic status having an influence on future generations.

Nope, as far as intelligence goes, the nature vs nurture debate has been quite conclusively settled, using twin/sibling/adoption studies where the sibs are either raised together or separated; taken together, these studies afford an excellent opportunity to separate the effects of nature and nurture . Nature (genes) plays a much larger role than environment (nurture) in determining adult IQ when the child grows up. This is quite a counterintuitive result, but the heritability of IQ scores measured in childhood is actually much lower than the final score when the child has grown up. One would expect that the nurture effect should have a steady cumulative effect on the IQ score as the child ages, but it seems things don't work out this way. For whatever reason, the adult intelligence of an adopted child raised away from his birth parents nevertheless seems to follow his birth, not his upbringing. A child born to genius parents but raised by very normal parents is still likely to be very, very smart.

 

The same probably holds true for many other personality traits (including bad stuff like psychopathy) but IQ is probably one of the easiest things to objectively measure. Bottom line: nurture is important in ensuring the child is healthy and maximising their potential, but nature reigns supreme.

 

To answer your question - the difference in IQ between siblings can be attributed to the exact mix of genes they inherited from each of their parents. Intelligence is basically a polygenic trait. Unless two siblings are identical twins, they only share 50% of their genes, and there's lots of room for variation. Plus there could be a smaller component coming from differential nurture, of course.

KUALA LUMPUR - A Bosnian, who is a Malaysian Permanent Resident holder, is suing his former girlfriend for abusing his sperm to have "better offspring" from European stock.

 

Ervin Ahbabovic, a 41-year-old commercial director of a private limited company, stated that he lived with the 29-year-old Malaysian woman some years ago and they had a baby boy born on Feb 7, 2010.

 

He and the woman later separated but she contacted him often to reconcile for the benefit of the baby, but Ahbabovic claimed that he was actually being treated like a "tool" for the woman to have better children, thanks to his "superior" sperm.

 

This, he claimed, was due to the perception that the European DNA is of an "unparallel and astonishing quality" compared to the local kind.

he's differing in what he's saying in the 1st place lah.

 

His original point is that intelligence is not inherited from parents. It's random. So within the various offspring, it's all variable and statistical chance.

I wouldn't compare LKY with Hitler, or if I did so, I would acknowledge that LKY pales in comparison with Hitler's blatant evil.

 

There's nothing wrong in acknowledging the role of human genetics in human accomplishment (for instance, the role of heritability in IQ, which I mentioned in my last post).

 

What seems to rub people the wrong way is for a leader, especially an autocratic or dictatorial one, to use that knowledge to try to shape the population to become healthier, smarter, stronger, etc. This is eugenics. It strikes people as distasteful because this is what you do to crops and prize spaniels. Not to people.

 

Even within the broad umbrella of "eugenics", there are different grades of "ick". The mildest form is selective breeding. LKY encouraged this. The most draconian, brutal form involves forced sterilisation and even extermination/genocide of undesirable elements. Hitler practised this extreme. It should be clear to anyone that what LKY espoused was nowhere near as evil as what Hitler actually carried out. So there's a big difference.

The funny thing is that I was saying this to my friends this morning over coffee. If this Bosnian thinks he's of superior stock, we should put him in a time machine and send him back some years to some Serbs who'll show him how "superior" they think he is.
