Japan Navy's latest "Destroyer"

I read several books written by ang moh about Chinese's foreign policy doctrine since 1800's .. the idea of 中华 (chung hwa) is such that China is at the center of the world, the highest civilization which is looked upon by all foreigners who are seen as less civilized. In almost all of Han rule, foreigners are welcomed with the expectation that they will embrace Chinese culture and become one of the Chinese. This is true for a very long time, most of the foreign tribes as we know them in history .. the Huns, the Turks, the Tartars, the Mongols, the Manchus, all of them became Chinese, including foreign rulers who embraced the Chinese system, Chinese writings, Chinese literature, etc. Most of them eventually take up Chinese names. ZH's trip was no different in seeking foreign recognition of the highest civilization of the world. Compare this with the US of today .. rolleyes.gif

Yeah now the whole world wants to be Americans.

We eat US food like Macs & KFC, wear T shirts and jeans,

watch US movies and TV shows, listen to US music and eve take

American names.

:D

By next year this time, Japan will have 7 such small and medium "destroyers".

Come and open this old thread. Back to the topic of 'Destroyer'.

The origin of the word 'Destroyer' was from Torpedo Boat Destroyer. These ships were supposed to be small fast warships with guns just big enough to outrange and defeat torpedo boats before they got into firing range of the main battle line. Before the guided missile age, anything bigger than 4 to 5k tons goes into 'Cruiser' category.

But now in the 21st century, everybody want to be politically correct and call their bloody 8-10k cruisers as destroyers. This Japanese 20k+ ton warship taking it to further extremes.

China should have called their Liaoning a Destroyer as well.

Got 7 meh?

Idzumo and sister

2 x Hyuga class

2 x Shirane (I think going to de-commission soon if not already?)

You including Haruna and Hiei is it? The Shirane and Haruna class at least not so blatant lah, no full flight deck. Can still argue for 'Destroyer' status. Idzumo and Hyuga class is very thick skin.

The Izumo bears an uncanny resemblance in profile to the Yorktown-class of American fleet carriers that the Imperial Japanese navy tried so hard to sink in World War 2 (and they succeeded in sinking two of the three-ship class), only the fabled USS Enterprise survived the war.

Comparison (Izumo in brackets)

Displacement full load: 25,900 tons (27,000 tons)

Length: 251m (248m)

Beam: 33m (38m)

Draft: 8m (7.5m)

Speed: 32.5 knots (30 knots)

Range: 23,200 km (unspecified)

Engines: 120,000 shp (112,000 shp)

Complement: 2,200 men (970 men)

With the non-angled flight deck, it would not look out of place posing as a WW2 carrier for some historical movie remake, once you place some Hellcats, Avengers, Helldivers and Corsairs on the flight deck (just saying), except it is a Japanese ship.

what I know is:

2 x 16ddh

2 x 22ddh

3 x Ōsumi class LST which can carry up to 8 heli each

OK you included the LSTs, I thought talking about 'Destroyers' only.

I am of the belief that after the USN, the JMSDF is a candidate for the 2nd strongest Fleet on earth. Probably better than the RN in some respects. Until the RN gets the 2 QE class online that is.

Due to the enclosed bow, it is actually closer in looks to the RN Carriers (Illustrious class) and even the Taiho.

The new Japanese "destryoers" are AC in disguise.

All they need to do is strength the deck of the ship to be able to take the heat of the F35B and these ships can convert into AC instantly.

RN's 2 carriers largely depending on the success of F35B. else, they need to fall back to the harriers.

And could this be Russia's first nuclear powered AC after so long?

Didn't know Japan carrier Kaga is here in Singapore.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/japan-s-largest-warship-visits-singapore-on-indo-pacific-10841886

Watch the above video for a sneak peek of the carrier.

Capable of supporting fighter jets siah. The sister ship is Izumo.

Compared to US carrier Nimitz class it's no small fish. If you compare between their run way/landing strip you will see the Japan carrier can support a lot of planes.

It's meant to be a heli/fighter carrier.

The japs are waiting for F35 VTOL version which is supposed to replace the ageing F18 hornet on board USA carriers.

But the F35 project is fraught with issues and delay.

F-35B V/STOL leh .. vertical / short take off landing. All the big aircraft carrier are from WW2 / Cold War era. Our own air base in the future will be down sized and fitted with F-35B. These new planes need very powerful engines which haven't yet been successfully replicated by the Russians (they got short take off).

but  u see the ford class getting even bigger then nimitz.

i dun think any 1 can match ford class carrier,

They plan to convert to a fighter carrier for F35 , but haven go ahead.

and i think certain law prevent them from having a fighter carrier.

neec by pass the law also

Depends on the type of mission .. the US is probably the only country with a fully operational carrier group. They can have many different types of planes for transport, reconnaissance, bombing, air superiority, etc. over long period of time.

i think they got around 11 carrier group.

the rest of the world add up also cannot match :XD:

The military is increasingly allowed to deploy overseas.

Abe's govt is also pro relaxation of the constitutional constraints on their military.

They have a small base in djibouti for piracy prevention also. Lol just between the US and china bases.

can or cannot its all US say .

any opposition esp from china wont have much effect .

if any thing that prevent japan from having a invasion force , i guess it might be within their own country.

until now they still brain washing their ppl about the real truth of WW2.

but its slowly being dig out from within,

My personal opinion. It's high time Japan starts playing a more active role in regional defence. Time has changed and evolved. Past Japan aggression should not be an excuse for them not to be more engaged and involved in regional stability, especially with the bulldozer strategy of a rising China.

I seriously don't think Japan will re-run another Pearl Harbour and ww2.
