As a durian lover, I hope the Chinese will succeed so that they can plant, grow and supply their own market from Hainan. I don't really want to pay $50/kg for my black gold MSW from Malaysia. 😂

Different perspectives lol.

Same with golden kiwi. I only found out last year that Kiwis are actually from china. Real name is chinese gooseberry.

Showed my kids the video where kiwis are from.

Apparently now the Chinese trying to reverse engineer.

Its like silkworm and Tea... Both illegally brought out of dynastic china.

Good variety will be sought after, but Hainan climate is more suitable for Vietnam and Thai variety.

Malaysia MSW, or the taste we are used to will not likely be replicated

Overall demand falls not due to copying from Malaysia, but there are alternatives

Anyway if u like namewee and his creativity, then have to accept his unapologetic nature.

Lean in with the criticism of motherland, but prc market is the biggest in Asia. So very tough.

Like half price Chinese's Shine Muscat Grapes, which used to be imported largely from Japan and Korea?

Just saying you can't stop these things.  Just like we can't stop Google, FB and Tiktok from stealing the advertising dollar of SPH.

Got to wait at least 20 years for their msw tree to become 老树, then might see the their success. Currently new Hainan trees are young, fruit won't be nice or low yielding.

A quick Google search say d195 was registered in 1989, which I guess roughly this is the time they spread the msw to grow in other plantation outside Raub. So roughly 20 years then we see decent quality msw coming from other plantation from Johore.

To me this 老树 theory seems not actively backed up by scientific logic.

Unless the 树 is still actively growing and diverting sugars to other parts. That means haven't reached peak height. Peak maturity.

Muscat grapes I find OK only niah. Their skin can be bit tough at times even when the flesh inside is soft.

I buy only prc ones. Cos I don't even find the Korean ones much better.

But usa and aussie green globe or green seedless is way nicer than whatever India/SA/Mexico what not.

But price not so nice.

even golden kiwi. The best is still from nz. I've had zespri origin from Italy etc and other places. The fruits don't seem to ripen properly. More chance of getting a bad fruit.

Navel oranges also. Aussie, USA or don't eat.

Nothing against Chinese copying Malaysia. Different cost structure.

China blueberries (the bigger ones) are good vfm. Better than most countries.

Golden kiwis require a lot of care even compared to normal green kiwis. High labour component. And need experience.

I'm sure there's skill/know how and experience involved. Or else everyone would do it cos it's a lucrative crop.

I'm just saying the simple fact is that make fruit nicer overall is just concentrating sugars and the micro climate/soil chemistry. Producing fruit is just a life cycle stage of a mature plant.

I believe grafting helps in getting the trees to maturity fruit bearing faster compare to seeds. Saw in a video they can graft a msw branch onto another breed, but the msw branch will bear msw fruit.

China should plant olive trees in Xinjiang region where they are already planting table grapes. The climate is quite similar for olives too.

Spain supply has been affected with warmer climate and much lower yield pushing up prices globally.

Hopefully Pakistan plant a lot more olive trees....

https://www.bjreview.com/Latest_Headlines/202203/t20220328_800280662.html#:~:text=Although China is a large, reaches of the Yangtze River.

China, a huge potential market for olive products from Pakistan

Although China is a large country, olive trees can only be planted in some limited areas along the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Now, the total cultivation area of the olive trees in China is only about 400,000 hectares.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has immense potential in cultivation of olive trees owing to its suitable topography and climate from north to south. Olive is a subtropical evergreen tree, cold and drought resistant, as well as a long-lived tree with strong growth capacity. Therefore, water scarce areas such as Suleiman Mountains near Waziristan, plains in Balochistan and diverse terrain in Punjab offer an environment for low-irrigation olive farming.

If olives are planted on all arable land in Pakistan, the country could become one of the world’s leading olive oil producers and exporters, creating a large number of jobs and earning a large amount of foreign exchange.

Pakistan now has a cultivation area of about 27,000 hectares. The Pakistani government attaches great importance to the development of the olive cultivation industry and plans to expand the planting area to 70,000 hectares.

With the improvement of living standards, Chinese people especially like to consume olive oil. Last year, the consumption of olive oil exceeded 60,000 tons, of which about 30,000 tons were imported, mainly from Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Australia.

Although China is not a big country in olive tree cultivation and olive oil production, relevant technologies are in a leading position in the world.

At present, both China and Pakistan attach great importance to deepening and expanding cooperation in the field of agriculture under the framework of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Therefore, I believe that one of the priorities of China-Pakistan agricultural cooperation should be technical cooperation in olive tree cultivation and olive oil production.

With the large-scale expansion of olive tree cultivation in Pakistan and the close technical cooperation between China and Pakistan in this regard, China may become a huge market of olive products from Pakistan in the future.

In terms of cooperation, I would like to tell my Pakistani friends something. There are mainly four major olive tree cultivation bases in China, one is Kaijiang County of , Sichuan Province, the other is Longnan City of Gansu Province, the third is the low mountain valley area along the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, and the fourth is the dry and hot valley area of the Jinsha River. In addition, in recent years, more than 7,000 hectares of olive trees have been planted in Guangyuan City of Sichuan Province, which has become another important olive cultivation base in China.

Pakistan may cooperate closely with these olive tree cultivation bases in China, especially their scientific research institutions. Pakistan may also encourage these Chinese olive cultivation bases to invest in Pakistan with improved varieties and modern technology, and jointly develop Pakistan’s olive industry with local counterparts.

They are not contented with their sufficient supply domestically. They have a huge appetite to prove to the world in whatever they do that they can do it. They are always trying to gain control over something in alot of aspect. You gave them one cm, they will try one inch and eventually one metre.

I am not a fan as well. My favorite grape is still autumn crisp but they are getting really expensive these days.

I hope they grow some autumn crisp too. Lol.

China is so big and while they are behind the Americans in GMO, they are certainly advancing fast in many areas, including agriculture.

Can you blame them for trying to get rich?  They can't get rich by invading / occupying other countries in a multipolar world, like what the Brits, French and Americans have been doing for a few centuries.  Not sure if they would if they could. 😂

Anyway, it is Chinese competitiveness. With 1.4b people, it is a hypercompetitive society, perhaps more than the Koreans with a somewhat similar culture.

By the way, our neighbors say the same about us.

The OBOR likely encompass agrifood business too.

China has so many mouth to feed, once they shift preference, the global price will shoot up because of such a large consumer base. They still have large area in northwest that can be developed into agriculture to be more self sustaining....

That will do some good to rest of the world.
