Maths problem

I think another point taken from here is that we shouldn't take the info online for granted and should always add our own dose of discretion.

The education system today isn't very much like what some of our brothers here have exclaimed. After the fiasco many years back when the psle paper was too tough n kids were left crying, steps have been taken to avoid a repeat.

Papers today are more manageable but you can't please everyone. Too easy, moe can't stream fairly too. The recent decision to publish all questions yearly also meant parents can now see the rigour of those papers.

Let's not fume until we gather all facts.

Ahhh... thanks!

For everyone still not sure how this works, I attach the solution below

SASMO-Question-solution.jpg

I really have low IQ.... or can say they are playing with word.. or there are flaws in the question and answer...

referring to the answer; "if Cheryl has told Albert that her birth month is May or June, then it is possible that her birthday may be May 19 or June 18." But there still have May 14 and 16... and jun 17...

Although 18 and 19 are unique; when Bernard says don know, that does not mean Albert can strike off the whole May and June... what if Cheryl told Bernard the day is 15...? May and August appeared 15... Albert and Bernard also don know her birthday mah, cos 15 appeared 2 times...

Really confused....

I also not fully convinced on striking out the whole month. [scholar]

The people who set the question already came out to explain the answer. Not convince also no use [laugh] [laugh]

okok.. allow me to phrase it this way...

for the albert to definitively KNOW that bernard cannot know the date... he has to KNOW that the day does not fall in may or june.. leaving only the july or august dates possible... [:)]

That is correct. Because May and June got unique days so if one knows the day, he knows the month too. So both months are out.

its becoz albert first says that both bernard n him dont know when is bday, so since 18 n 19 r unique, both may n june are out, coz if bernard know its 18 or 19, then that first sentence is not justifiable.

then its elimination process for duplicates dates AND months, then end up july 16 left

Problem is how he eliminate the month of May. Because it's not 19 so cannot be may is too weak an argument. July wise is straight forward to eliminate. Only two date with one been rare. So the other date confirm the guy who know month won't be able to tell.

if bernard knows its 18 or 19, then albert's first sentence is not true, n we assume albert isnt lying :D

for 14, bernard isnt supposed to know the mth, so both 14 r out.

for aug, albert isnt supposed to know the date, so both aug r out.

Start with when Albert first heard the month given to him. In this month he saw there's no unique dates. This allows him to say he is sure Bernard also don't know the birthday.

What is the month with no unique dates? July and Aug.

Which part of the question say that there is no unique date?? It was not stated in the question that Albert saw no unique date in the month. Hence I say the explanation seems not right.

Disclaimer. I just want to clarify because the explanation of elimination doesn't sound right.

It's not stated, that's why you have to infer from how Albert can be very sure Bernard doesn't know the birthday at first.
