Opel17 6th Gear July 21, 2013 Share July 21, 2013 Saab is indeed different. Check after 3 mins you stopped the car. if its cold when you do the checking, its unreadable with oil all over the marking Usually, we need to wipe the dipstick before insert again, then remove to read the level marking. ↡ Advertisement
TVT Supercharged July 21, 2013 Share July 21, 2013 Here's an old thread about EO - some bros say a bit overfill is OK, some say only up to max... http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showto...672283&st=0 My car's engine capacity is slightly less than 4 ltrs, but my mech pour in every drop in a 4 ltr EO, and the dipstick reaches MAX level. But I understand overtime the engine will "eat" EO so I didn't bother to drain it out to 3/4 level....
TVT Supercharged July 21, 2013 Share July 21, 2013 if the workshop really over filled for you,go back and make noise and ask them to drain out the excess foc last time when i found out,i went back and they took it out Yes, exactly. Go back to that WS and demand they drain out the excess oil.
TVT Supercharged July 21, 2013 Share July 21, 2013 So which is correct way to check engine oil dipstick level...cold overnight or warm ??? Cold overnight should be the best reading. Warm is OK too, but must take out, wipe with cloth clean clean then reinsert to get the reading. I've tried both ways before, and both results are not much difference. Only difference is cold reading is clearer and easier to see the level.

Acemundo Supercharged July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 (edited) Best get the WS to drain some out. just curious. my car manual state 6 litres. when the workshop used the dipstick to check they say 5 litres is enough. am i right to say most likely 5 litre is the minimum and 6 litre is the maximum? i see the dipstick has 2 markings. Acemundo Supercharged July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 Your mech should ran the engine, one litre will end up in the filter oh, so means 6 litre is more likely? basket, inexperienced mechanic.

The Owner Manual is usually accurate. When it states 6L, probably means 6L dry fill. When WS drain the old oil out, they can't possibly drain 6L cos there due to be old oil inside the engine. But 1L difference I think is too much.

When your mech say 5 litres is enough, what did the dipstick shows? Ideally it should be between MIN and MAX but preferred level should be 1/2-3/4 mark towards MAX. Actually my mech also never run engine. He just take out dipstick, wipe it, re-insert and pull out to read the level. And the level is exactly at MAX. I always stand beside him when he does that, so I can be sure he didn't overfill or underfill.
Myxilplix Turbocharged July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 Also take note that if the oil is cold it might bypass the filter until it heats up and thins. I might start a topic about the checking oil hot vs cold thing. ↡ Advertisement
