W1ck3d Clutched July 3, 2013 Share July 3, 2013 Hi, I had my car making funny noise and my ws diagnose that I need to change the fan belt tensioner and pulley. That solved my problem but now I have another issue. Usually when I am stopping at the red light, my RPM s jumping up and down before it is stabilizing. I also noticed that the rpm also changing when I'm rotating my steering wheel. Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it related with the tensioner that I just changed? ↡ Advertisement

W1ck3d Clutched July 3, 2013 Author Share July 3, 2013 RPM will jumps and slowly down when aircon compressor cuts in. Like Ooosh, try driving with aircon off see if got same issue. It's jumping up and down for a few times like between 800-1000 rpm before it settles back at 1000 RPM. I will test and see if it's behaving the same if I switch off the air con

W1ck3d Clutched July 4, 2013 Author Share July 4, 2013 Well, he said the pulley got stucked and cannot rotate. And I'm not in position to verify, so no choice need to trust him. But I had problem where my engine got loud noise and another funny ongoing noise. All the problems are resolved. But now got this new problem. Sigh.... Alpha78 6th Gear July 4, 2013 Share July 4, 2013 Might need to reset ECU. I had the same issue after cleaning throttle body during 80k servicing. Workshop did a soft reset of ECU but idling was erratic. After hard reset of ECU everything went back to normal.

Alpha78 6th Gear July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 What is soft and hard reset Not sure, maybe the workshop boss smoke me. Supposedly he said he soft-reset the ECU after cleaning throttle body. But idling RPM went up and down, so I drove back to the workshop and he did another reset (supposedly hard reset). I thought ECU reset only had one type. Reset means all learnt air-fuel ratio settings removed.

Yeobh 4th Gear July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 It depends on the make and model of cars, most bread and butter Asia cars can be reset merely by disconnecting the battery. For European and US cars the reset back to default can only be carried out by scanner preferable OEM set.
Yeobh 4th Gear July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 Very easy way to make money. Most of time what is need is to properly clean up the pulley multi grooves with a wire brush or better still wire buffer .

After that the erratic idling RPM went away.
