Almost all the HDB MCPs have this lousy design, it is very dnagerous for MPV and SUV. To aggravate the problem, HDB will paint all the parking along the outer wall side red, leaving the half height parking lots white for hourly parking. End up those hourly parking MPV and SUV have to be very careful when making reverse parking. Most of the time they are unable reverse the car fully into the lot. And when one just have to misjudge once , his car will be damaged. I drove full size MPV for 15 years, so i can understand the problem of the lady driver.

My place is just the opposite, red lots are on the inner side. White lots on the outer. The one who kena is a resident and she parked on the red lots.

Hardly any of such setup but at least the season holders can park at the white lots, but not the other way around for the hourly parking. Edited by Ct3833

Ok.

I think I haven't really drove a big MPV or SUV into such MSCP before.

But I think I kena one case with my previous Fit before.

Reversed because of cash card gantry problems, and end up reversing into a lorry's protruding wing mirror. Reverse sensors didn't even sound anything behind.

Luckily it's only a small scratch on the rear window.

Since this thread is freak accident, i think you brought up a interesting point - protruding wing mirrors.

When i was young and sitting in my dad's vans, i already noticed the design of the wing mirrors. My father drove at least 4 generations of Liteace, before he retired.

I think the first one, as those protruding wing mirrors (unlike the current design which is just like normal cars' and are not very 'protruding'). My father reminded me to adjust it (the passenger side one, when i was helping me to do so) at an angle that the driver can see, and it will not be protruding excessively to the side such that it will become a hindrance to other road-users. I remembered that clearly.

Fast forward a few decades, now i think more than half the vans/lorlees/pickups i see on the roads, have these wing mirrors positioned 180 deg to the windscreen! This means that if the width of the vehicle body (alone without accounting for the wing mirrors) is 1.9 m, then the actual width clearance needed by the vehicles will likely be (1.9 + 0.3 + 0.3) m = 2.5 m!

That i'm sure is the reason why you ended up reversing into the lorry's protruding wing mirror. I think those drivers are very selfish to place/position the mirrors so 'wide' out. Yes, it will give them a clearer/better view of the traffic behind at the side, but it is also very hazardous to other road users, be it vehicles or even people.

I had personally seen the left wing mirror of a double decker bus (when it was slowing down to a stop when approaching a bus stop), almost brushing the head of a tall guy who was standing close to the edge of the bus stop.

With the majority of the bikes still doing lane spliting all the time, these protruding wing mirrors just made the roads much more hazardous for everybody.

sorry bro but i disagree. i rather have the lorries have protruding mirrors to cover blind spots and to see better, than to have more accidents...

Poor design or not.

I still see vans as large as Toyota highace parked comfortably in MSCPs.

I don't see them reversing into these low overhang structures that is unique to the rows of lots in the middle.

Why? Because they are smart enough to know that with their high rear ends, sure hit the overhang structure one... So they cleverly choose lots that are along the outer row.

Problem solved (or avoided).

There are 2 types of lots in each mscp. Nobody point a gun at the lady to die die park her car in a lot that has low overhang.

As @chowyunfatt always says, "cannot swim don't blame the swimming trunk too tight" :D

Wow he must have big balls to say that.

I was also kayu and lucky for not hitting the pole, but nobody expects SG HDB carpark designers to be that dumb.

I really don't mean to be condescending but I do.

To think it from another perspective, if they are not that dumb, they would not be designing car parks for the hdb!

It took years and many shattered rear screen before hdb decided to act and wrap reflective strip on or painted the protruding bar.Even signs were put up to caution drivers.

If that is not an indication of a stupid and flawed design, I don't know what is.

Later HDB point finger at car manufacturers for making bigger and bigger cars without telling them.

And why didnt install all round sensors to the rear.

That would solve their design problem which already cast in concrete.

Haha, true. But those are only old CPS. I'm sure they know what they did wrong and improve from there. Just first timers driving hatch/van that go to old cps may kenna as it's unexpected, like you go swimming in swimming pool and get bitten by crocodile. Afterwards people ask why you didn't check for crocodile before diving in.

Actually if I'm not wrong, the mirrors of those lorlees are those slightly convex ones, which covers wide angles. Even if they push/position it further in front (instead of going to the side), they will still be able to have a good view of the side/back traffic.

I agree that if the mirrors are widely protruded, they will prevent accidents, then they should be allowed/encouraged to happen; but i'm thinking the reverse might not be true...
