A discussion based on discussion on how best to improve COE bidding system ?

- One family one car ?

-Cap on car loan to value -50-50%

-Impose levies on 2nd/3rd car justifiable ?

- Judge on car horse-power ?

I think Singaporeans love their cars. Few will support the horsepower measure. Finally, we have a system that doesn't penalise on small engine high powered cars.

Best way? Tackle the root cause

1) Get rid of the FTs (PMETs).

failing that,

2) Get rid of the P@P.

Bro, U can get rod of (1), but i donot think you can get rid of (2), hence youmust do something to create a (3) . . .

Sometimes I think ppl are very cute. Try to take a few steps back to see the big picture. When someone put so many vehicles on the roads, how to solve congestion? Think about it, the more cars ppl buy the merrier for them, tweak the system makes their bank account even fatter. They say control car population, implementing more policies, all help to do one thing and one thing only.

Do not be a fool and think ideas will help improve traffic conditions. There's only one obvious winner here.

i love both suggestion 1 & 2..but truth be told..both are not easy..especially with so many daft sinkies still supporting P@P

Asking for feedback....I think they are asking the obvious and they already know. Ask yourself, why is peak hour traffic smoother on school holidays? Why can't the authorities start from there? See what is the cause and think of ways to solve the problem. I'm not saying to let students have plenty of school holidays. Surely there are reasons why during normal school days there is so much traffic.

Tweak tweak tweak the coe system also no point. Trying to control ppl to buy this buy that is very un-democratic.

Totally agree. There is no problem with the COE system. The problem is with LTA's over project and sudden cut back; the previous 100% , 10 yr financing; allowing agents to bid on buyers' behalf.

Here's my thought on the list of policy

1) not allow to take any loan. Buy whatever car in CASH

2) scrap COE

3) impose leive for owners who own more than 1 car

4) impose leive to house hold own more than 2 cars

5) the leive system should take over the Coe system. Ppl bid for a piece of paper for their 2nd car onwards( owner) or 3rd car onward (household)

Everything should be 100% cash!!!!

The obvious solution is to stagger or shift the starting school hour to later, maybe 8.30am, 9am or whatever. however, this will also mean the working hour of the parent has to be shifted. changing the office hour is up to private organisation and so the gahment cannot dictate. and dont forget civil service have to start to serve the public at 8.30am , some like poly clinic even earlier. so changing the school hours is not so simple can improve the peak hour traffic thats it. now already primary school some are afternoon session already.

It is very unlikely that the COE system will be removed. It's like slapping themselves in their own faces and admitting that the system was flawed all the while and they just realized it. Neither will they further punch themselves in their faces to tweak it to a point that everyone can happily buy a car with super low COE like yesteryears. Hence my take is that from now to 2016 it is unlikely to see big changes. Very most to please the middle and lower income groups they may just slap a surcharge on 2 n more car owners. Pleasing general public is effortless when can still milk the cash cow. High COE plus surcharge on 2 or more. Make private transport more expensive to maintain too. Higher ERP plus higher road tax plus whatever taxes that can regulated. Double triple and quadrupled happiness for the coffers.

If there's no COE, can you take the congestion everyday?

When i was in bangkok, sometimes even walking is faster than traveling on the road (that only applies to short distance trips)

1) Might as well, ban citizens from taking any loan. Then, Ah Long will control the market.

2) Scrap COE, our traffic jams will rival Jakarta.

3) How much levy is enough to deter? Besides, rich owners don't clog out streets.

4) Too many loopholes for successful implementation.

5) Too many loopholes- Proxy bidding, double transfer, black market transactions, etc.
