did you find yourself competing with fresh grads when u made a drastic career switch?

financial consequences may affect the family which i'm trying to avoid.

i got a friend after 7/8 yrs in engineering. took ACCA and subsequently went to work as a big 4 auditor at a huge pay cut reporting to a lady manager almost 10 yrs his junior.

Now that is one of the worst careers to switch to (IMO), seeing how auditors work.

Why did he do that?

Yeah that is true.

Engineering is really pathetic. Most of my engineering friends started a little ahead than theory-warriors (aka non professional degree holders) like myself but the gap closed up very quickly and now they are lagging behind. It is sad because these engineers are intellectually superior and whose output benefit mankind directly.

Engineering itself seems to have ceiling, but if he can transition to project engineer or head up his department, that's something he can move up from. Or move to Rolls Royce plant along TPE there lor, think they needed engineers also, but depending on his specialisation too.

It takes more than technical skills for engineers to move on to management, sales or product specialist role. Most engineering grads of yesteryears aren't trained in other disciplines except technical stuffs.

Those with natural inclination towards human relationship would have moved out of pure technical role or would not have even step into it upon graduation.

Ya, but not everyone finds their role early. I also went into engineering because it was something I liked, but moved on because relationship with people is more interesting than relationship with machine. Hehe..

Not neccessary.

Best pay are still corporate jobs...but you need to be very good.

Gov jobs to me are for stability. If I am a girl with little aspiration to climb, just want some stability and time for family, I would go for gov jobs.
