social & alternate media magnifies the effects of coffeeshop talks.

and magnifies further when people stops trusting the 'news' coming out from the local media.

perhaps they should also work on winning the trust back... from 156th to 1st? [laugh]

seriously, i dont give a damned about this ranking.

and usually they have a agenda in the way they give ranking.

Agree with Darryn, there are too may people out there just dying to get on their moral high horses and will find any excuse to do so and point fingers at others.

Seems like people are going around wanting to be offended, so that they can feel self-righteous.

I believe it's a reflection of their own moral decay.

This is something that bugs the everloving crap out of me - I see an increasing trend where people are looking for offence, they're trying to catch others out, and find the "wrong" in what is said. They are actively trying to play "gotcha" with others (particularly true with regards to politicians).

Instead of trying to reflect, learn, understand and grow - (I feel) there is a growing trend that people want to be offended - and make others look bad.

It drives me absolutely insane,

With this latest comment I am quite honestly stunned that anybody could read it and truly believe that the speaker is advocating rape, or that the speaker doesn't believe in democracy - to honestly and truly believe either I think is an epic fail of the mightiest proportions that sees the believer needing to either grow some brains or go back to reading comprehension class.

I followed the American election and saw the same (but worse) trend - things like Obama's "you didn't build that" controversy.

When I see this I actually shudder for the future of any sort of representative democracy - after all, how can you have a democracy when your representatives can't share ideas and thoughts? It becomes totally self defeating and you may as well be ruled by a benign dictator.

*like*

It's interesting how people can comb through a "disliked" person's words, not to understand the thoughts presented but just solely to find fault and then make a big big mountain out of something, which in the first place, was misunderstood, taken out of context or maliciously twisted to sound, well, malicious.

Sometimes, it's done to be popular to a certain group of people but oftentimes, it reflects how easily that person's mind can actually be " blinded" or swayed without much effort. It's scary that one can be thus manipulated to think in a certain way just like that..... and the owner of that brain did not even realise it.

Thnx for sharing....time to remove prejudices and ensure we truly understand what others are saying before judging....or taking things out of context.

Safe ride and a good weekend to all.

Cheers

I share the same observation.

Unfortunately due to the political system we have, there is a serious misrepresentation for a huge proportion of the local population; resulting in unvented anger that manifest in this ugly manner. This will only get worse.

As what happen in all conflict when 1 party's firepower is so much greater than the other, the weaker side resort to guerrilla tactics. Hit and run without care of rules of engagement. The fact that the ruling party continues to threaten to sue and the defensive posturing of the PAP leadership exacerbated the situation. Such conflict can only end in stalemate if both party continues to fight, the weaker party can never win but can inflict massive asymmetric damages, while the stronger party can never win hearts of the the guerrillas over with continued attacks.

I urge the anti-gov people to take the higher ground like what the WP leadership has done. Go for the ball, not the player.

...

You'd think by now these public figures would have realised that they need to be careful with what they say/post because a) the general public is not very bright and doesn't seem to read past the first few lines and b) there are many people out there just waiting to jump on their cases.

You're absolutely right. Which is why I refrain from posting anything on facebook...

It's political-correctness gone crazy...

Believe it or not though, one of the things I have always liked about Singapore is the strong laws relating to defamation (even if I do think they are abused at times) - if it keeps the debate more "proper" and cuts down on people "anyhow" saying things, then its a good thing.

I am like the idea of strong law. But there are 2 parts to this, sensitivity of the law and the intensity of the punishment. I am in agreement with the intensity, but the law is too sensitive in my opinion.

For example, I am ok with imprisonment for use of violence against another person, but not when we start putting people who intentionally bumps into another person to get on a train into prison. Our defamation law does not feel right to me.

Unfortunately, the general political maturity of Singaporeans, as shown by the reactions to this episode, has a long way to go.............

Be careful of what you say about political maturity.

Else wait someone will come and say that you are insulting the intelligence of Singaporeans, just like what happen to me in a previous thread. <_<

u have a point there, and I also believe that we are not actualy ready. Do ppl really understand the meaning of a true democracy?

I believe if we do practise a true democracy, folks here would go crazy....really. New found freedom and unsure how to exspress

And if you speak to some of these folks are going 2 extreme without them knowing it. Anarchy and Communism.

i think we need to find out the motive behind that statement.

Is it for the overall good in the long term or more for vested interest.

Anarchy is a theory while communism has been a proven failure.

Our system is nearer to socialist democracy but for the past decade, i don't know what it has evolved into.
