Desktop cannot connect Fibre wireless

Hi ALL IT Gurus

 

My fibre broadband modem n D-Link router are installed in main hall.. all set up by my ISP last night.

 

Andriod mobile devices n tablet received signal at full bar EVEN IN ALL BEDROOMS. Very Fast connection.

 

However for my studyroom desktop, i only receive ONE BAR of wireless signal. I try to connect, key in e usual security password..it say 'windows does not connect to internet'.

 

Thinking that bedroom signal could be weak thus unable to connect internet. BUT my mobile devices/tablet ARE STILL receiving full bar signal even placed next to my desktop.

 

could it be my wireless lan card in my desktop (2-3yrs old HP Presario Windows 7) are not 100% compatible to fibre network, WLAN card failing suddenly or some configuration has nt done properly?

 

 

Any good advise by the IT experts?

Use a wireless extender lor.

 

FYI not all devices' wireless system are built equal. Some has weaker receiving power. Just get a D-link range extender for your desktop. Or get a pair of wireless homeplug that plugs to your powerpoint socket. The latter will be cheaper dan the range extender.

 

I have both. My desktop is using the wireless homeplug and a range extender in my bedroom furthest from the modem.

usually built-in pci card is quite weak. chg channel? neighbours intercept, try in the day time as night suppose to be peak.

Check what your router is setup for frequency band (2.4/5Ghz) and security protocol (WEP/WPA/etc.).

They must matched to the desktop.

if u want, just buy a wireless N usb receiver $30-40. Rather than buy 2 homeplugs.

no guarantee though that it will work well. But i use one for my PC rather than get a pci-e card.

since you still suspect some configuration may not be done correctly, I suggest bringing your desktop into your hall to test first.

Nothing to do with desktop location, you PCI wireless card most likely is faulty liao. Rather than shifting the whole PC out or buying another other devices, set your tablet or mobile devices as a router and configure your PC to detect the mobile devices. If can detect the signal, then most likely your card is spoilt or incompatible to the D-link router

get another router to act as reciever. change the antena to large size one. .

 

also, make sure there is line of sight between your two router.

 

signal travel in a straight line. it dont turn around the corner like human.

 

meaning, if base on line of sight there is a wall that i 5mtr long between them. there is a 5 mtr long wall disturbing it.. even if the wall is only 1cm thick.

 

also, make sure that places that emit and revd the signal do not have a lot of wire around it. those will obstruct the signal too.

home plug is okay if you dont have lots of other plugs that is using the same circuit.

 

if there are lots of other electrical appliances, its going to be very bad.. this is personal experience.

Not true. Tax and Rx power as well as threshold sensitivity of PCI-e adapters are superior to USB adapters.

TS, go into the Admin console and take note of all of the wireless devices in the wireless clients list. Take note of their respective SNR. No. of coloured bars is not a good indicator, SNR or strength of wireless signal as detected by the individual devices in terms of dBm is more accurate.

from your description, it doesn't look like a weak signal problem. most common problem could be wrong wireless password at your desktop. if not, it could be your wireless card in the desktop that is faulty. i've not used Windows for a long time but i remember Windows has some built-in internet connection troubleshooting tool where you can run and it'll give you some clue as to which part could be the issue.

Can you check if your desktop wireless antenna is those that is behind the system box? Check if it is screwed in properly.

 

If it is so and your system box is under the table hidden one corner than the signal will be weak.

 

Check if your wireless PCI card allows you to attached a wired antenna, if so get one n attached it n place it on the table and see if you can get full bars of signal.

 

If the above does not work, then your PCI wireless card most likely is faulty.
