Total amount of Shirts and Blouse:

Shirts [ ][ ][ ][ ]

Blouse[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

Amount of money spent is equal:

Shirts [ ][ ][ ][ ][X]

Blouse[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

X stands for how much in total shirts cost more than blouse.

X = $5200

There were 2/5 as many boys as girls at carnival at first. After 42 boys and 42 girls added, ratio become 3/4 as many boys as girls. How many boys were at the carnival at first?

Please dont give me algebra answer as P5 havent learn yet and i think answer must be done in ratio way.

Please help bros, thanks

For P5, you have to draw model to solve this problem. Another two alternate methods are branching and guess and check. All these are the heuristics that the P5 students must learn.

Neutral Newbie

kiasi, kiasu mama and papa who did their 'A' level start to think their boys is genius and start challenging/disturbing teachers .

That's why many other new methods is required . It's all to keep mama papa blur, busy and spent more money on tuition to make themselves calm. But there is no much real value beyond P5 here.

Pinoy Pri 5 student just learn algebra only, save on tuition on the rest of crap , can get the job via asking for lower pay .

Govt blame ah boy stupid and lazy.

Papa mama 's kianjong gene burst out of their nose and start to scream for more tuition for his boy.

Oh i see, i already given the answer in algebra, i said to him tell ur teacher as long as method and answer is right, teacher has no right to penalize u hahahhaa

$5200 for shirt & blouse, so shirt or blouse is $2600.

ratio is 4:5 and $13 more for shirt. So A must be paying $13x5=$65 as he spent the same amount for both shirt & blouse. The no. of shirt = 2600/65 = 40

Ha.... but algebra is a bit too abstract. Nvm la... your child's school should have meet the parents session after SA1 exams right? Can find out more about heuristics lor. [laugh]

Algebra is also easy la.

price X+13 = X

ratio 4: 5

merge

4(x+13) = 5(x)

4x+52=5x

x=52

so a shirt costs $52+$13=$65

2600/65=40

I have an interesting question. Student will use Algebra to solve the problem, eventually. Then whats the point in teaching some fancy methods that they WILL properably not use much, if at all in future?

Not saying it not useful, but shouldn't the focus be on something else. Just a thought.

For instance, focus more on cretivity, group work, some hands on, things that Singaporeans lack serverely.

There is a good reason why schools do not teach full blown algebra solving methods in primary schools. What do you think that is?

Actually the maths nowadays is more focus on language skill compared to our time. If you've a good command of english, solving primary school maths with simple logic is very easy. I can solve this with simple logic (refer to my previous post) and there is no need to use alegbra or the block method.

Many students don't really understand this kind of question in the first place. so how would u expect them to solve the problem?

I was asked to solve this primary math problem. See below.

A walks some steps and runs 6 steps for 65 sec.

Then again, A walks some steps and run 14 steps for 41 sec.

How long does it take for A to walk up the steps?
