Petition to Change Right-turn Signalling at Crossings

The proposed changes are to help both pedestrian and motorist so I do not feel that they are one-sided.

The bus driver who knocked down the professor's wife at Clementi obviously did not mean to hit her and from the report it seems that he is totally distraught at having caused the loss of a life regardless of the reason.

From what I see if a junctions lights pattern have been changed some drivers who use it frequently wil get confused. Imo it takes both hands to clap. Pedestrian & drivers are all humans, they get fatigued too. Both have the equal responsibility on safety. Precautions should not be one-sided.

This is a good suggestion and without going into the details, seems like a plausible alternative.

Would you be able to give more detailed illustrations on how this can work?

Thanks!

I would propose another alternative.

For the 4 way junctions, only allow 1 way traffic to proceed, ie. giving both green light and green right arrow for 1 way at one time. Pedestrains who walk in the same direction will be also be given green light. There will be no worry for turning vehicles.

I have seen many junctions in Malaysia has this signalling method.

Petition using forum nicks? Is it legitimate?

Anyway, while I support your initiative to make the roads safer for pedestrians, I'm not really sure if this would practically work. If driver cannot see pedestrians crossing the road do you think they will notice the crossing lights which is not pointing in their direction?

I have thought that one possible solution would be to move pedestrian crossing further in leaving a 3-5m pocket for vehicles to wait. Sometimes it can be quite stressful having to watch out for too many things while doing right turn, with this you just focus on one thing at a time.

This would be great; could even create more employment at the same time. [:)]

Should post a traffic warden with lollipop and whistle at every junction to reduce accidents. [laugh]

Forum nicks are just the beginning to give LTA sufficient impetus to make changes. If need be, I believe those who furnish their nicks would support by giving their names for the petition to be official. While I cannot speak for the rest, I would.

For motorists, the signalling lights would simply disallow them from turning right (using the right-turn red-arrow) when there are pedestrians crossing.

This would also be helpful. I think an eventually viable solution to reduce accidents at traffic crossings can encompass a wide range of improvements and not be limited to just one aspect.

Forgive my ignorance but could you illustrate how this works?

Safest way is to convert junctions into 4-ways traffic control cross junction .... -_-

At any one time, one side of the vehicles on the move ... [drivingcar]

I think that means the red arrow is on while it's green for traffic going straight. Good recommendation, but not on all junctions. Only those with high human traffic.

Good idea but wonder will the traffic for right turn become jam due to shorten time allow for right turning? Esp for heavy road condition on some roads. [:/]

I think this type of traffic sequence doesnt really work on super heavy traffic junction. Cause the time taken for cars to move will be longer as usual, as one time only one side of the traffic can move. So jams will be created along the road before the junction.

I would like to add all cars stop for pedestrian crossing especially in major X-junction traffic light.

Aside to vehicles, pedestrians also must be alert and look-out for vehicle during X-ing at traffic light.

Many occasions, I witnessed pedestrians talking on hp or listening to music totally ignored on-coming traffic and near-missed.

If accident occurs, always the pedestrian suffer not the driver. To the driver, its only an offence and paid fine. Not a murder or criminal act.

if you visit malacca, almost every junction works that way, so for 4-way traffic junction, each take about 1-2 min.

Forgive my ignorance but could you illustrate how this works?

If you ever travel along Commonwealth Ave junction Queensway, you can see the controlled junction.

example:

a) vehicles coming from Farrer Road turning 'right' along Queensway to Commonwealth Ave (toward Ghim Moh) will go first. the rest wait for their turn.

b) then, vehicle coming along from Tanglin Halt or Police SOC side turning 'right' from Queenway to Commonwealth Ave (toward Alexandra Road) will move, the rest wait,

c) vehicle coming from Alexandra Road along Commonwealth Ave turning 'right' to Queensway (toward Holland Road) move, the rest wait, and lastly

d) vehicle from S'pore Poly along Commonwealth Ave turning 'right' to Queensway (toward Police SOC) wil move, the rest wait.

then, goes back again to a) again .... -_-

I still prefer 'Underpass' then overhead bridge .... -_-

Bicycles can also ride through it. Overhead bridge need bigger space fro the ramp for bicycles or handicap ... [:(]
