Thanks! I think the traffic junction at Lorong Chuan - Braddell leading to Toa Payoh / Lornie is like that too?

If you ever travel along Commonwealth Ave junction Queensway, you can see the controlled junction.

example:

a) vehicles coming from Farrer Road turning 'right' along Queensway to Commonwealth Ave (toward Ghim Moh) will go first. the rest wait for their turn.

b) then, vehicle coming along from Tanglin Halt or Police SOC side turning 'right' from Queenway to Commonwealth Ave (toward Alexandra Road) will move, the rest wait,

c) vehicle coming from Alexandra Road along Commonwealth Ave turning 'right' to Queensway (toward Holland Road) move, the rest wait, and lastly

d) vehicle from S'pore Poly along Commonwealth Ave turning 'right' to Queensway (toward Police SOC) wil move, the rest wait.

then, goes back again to a) again .... -_-

One of the main reason, people take things for granted pedestrians not checking whether it is safe to cross.

The petition should be getting pedestrains to check for oncoming traffic regardless of right of way.

Please include cyclist too, whom many of them insist on cycling while crossing....

For motorists, the signalling lights would simply disallow them from turning right (using the right-turn red-arrow) when there are pedestrians crossing.

Thanks for clarifying this, it wasn't obvious in your original letter.

Its NEA problem, afterall, 'once in fifty years' ... [cool]

Water ponding will not cause death, traffic junction crossing does. Shoes & slipper wet only, thats all ........ [:p]

Dear all,

In view of the increasing number of accidents at traffic-light junctions where vehicles have hit and killed crossing pedestrians, I will be writing to LTA to propose changing the right-turn signalling sequence at all traffic-light junctions with pedestrian crossings.

Presently many traffic-light right-turn signalling works by allowing the pedestrians to cross the roads simultaneously as vehicles turn right across their paths. This method theoretically reduces the overall waiting time for everyone in the system because it allows right-turning motorists to utilise pockets of time to go-ahead whenever there are no crossing pedestrians.

However, due to fatigue, carelessness, blind-spots and other reasons, there have been many instances of pedestrians getting run over by right-turning vehicles. Many of such accidents involve larger vehicles which, due to their size and larger blind-spots, are harder to control.

I would like to propose that the right-turning signalling be changed at such junctions so that right-turning vehicles cannot proceed to do so until the traffic lights have turned red for the crossing pedestrians. While this cannot totally eradicate similar accidents that arise due to jay-walking pedestrians, it will likely reduce the overall accident rates given that most pedestrians do obey the traffic crossing signals.

Through this petition I hope LTA will treat this issue with greater urgency and have it implemented sooner than later before more innocent lives are lost.

If you support this initiative, please indicate your user name below and I will update this first post:

I will send out the petition to LTA once we achieve at least 50 (do suggest if you think this number could be smaller or larger) on this list.

Thanks to all for your help!

There are pedestrians and cyclists who even after the Red Man light comes on, still jay-walk / jay-cycle. A few times almost run over them when I make right turns. Many others even stroll slowly oblivious to the fact that right turning cars also want to go past while watching for on-coming vehicles.

Yes, it is clever to know you have the right of way at the pedestrian crossings, but it is totally idiotic to prove it.

Juz to share on 2 nights back I witness a totally avoidable stupid accident due to turning right at cross junction along boundary road turning to serangoon ave 2..

Cab 'A turning right at cross junction, no pedestrian were crossing, a bike n cab 'B were quite a dist away (perhaps a 100m away still) queuing in front of me was an infinti, he was lucky he didnt follow cab 'A.. cab 'A took his own sweet time to turn despite no pedestrian, bike n cab 'B came n both show no signs of slowing down.. Bike manage to avoid, cab 'B jam brake, tyre screech for a couple of meters.. Kaboom.. Cab 'A passenger door was hit on, do a 180* turn..

While watching the whole incident in front of my eyes, I'm very certain that dis can be totally avoided.. Very often when vehicle in front of us is turning righ at crosd junction, most of us would juz follow the front vehicle if no cars were approaching.. Now I betta think twice after witnessing dis.. Rather get horn fr rear car den kenah xxx
