Actually what the difficulties they face are common to other SMEs.

so the point of foreigner reduction is to...make companies close down?

I think govt shd just ban this kind of heads I win, tails you lose kind of rental agreement.

I don't like REITs. Whether as a consumer/ store operator/ REIT holder.

REITs have cornered the market and with monopoly/ cartel pricing power, they foist upon tenants this kind of unfair arrangement.

i only own shares in 1 reit. But working in a SME, i agree man. rental kills... -_-

That's why all the restaurant, foodcourt, kopitiam operators don't want to hands-on or do full-time hands-on. Most operate multiple stalls in various locations, and just want to employ cheap foreign labour. That's why the tightening of foreign labour is hitting them hard now.

If you observe carefully, the typical zap chai png stall in kopitaims are quite similar in style, owned by the same boss, with MY or PRC workers manning the stalls, equipped with POS register and CCTV. Everything can be monitored through his/her smartphone. The boss just shake legs, probably has some other sidelines also. :D

There are very few standalone restaurants and food stall operator now.

not teochew restaurant, but i like the ambiance of Red Star, the popular dim sum restaurant

think it's one of the few restaurants left in Singapore that still have push cart dim sum

and its interior hasn't changed much for decades

I think almost 10 yrs ago, the outgoing CEO of centrepoint, mentioned REITS are insidious.

Now it's very obvious. Some REIT will replicate your biz if your biz is easy to replicate and of course, they know how well you have been doing since they pry into your books.

How to survive unless you are a big conglomerate?

Your business good, landlord red eyes, increase rental and wants a share of your profits (like many malls).

Precisely. Landlords or REITS hardly add value to the food or the service, but want to up rentals with the slightest excuse. :D
