I read the comment on CNA website with disbelief. I pray nobody got involved in accidents with ambulances that run the red lights legally. Many motorists in Singapore are too goondu to react to ERVs beating traffic lights without Traffic Police / Cisco outriders clearing the lane.

See ambulance on siren just give way. What so difficult?

What do we really lose by giving way even if it was a non emergency case?

If everybody need to double-confirm real or false case triple-analyse got emergency or non emergency before deciding to give way, I think we already lost our humanity.

Ok. I admit. I am one of those goondu who always stop when the lights turn green so that ambulance with the becon lights on go cross the red light but did not on the right side of junction,

Only now I know they not supposed to chiong red light

To be honest - we might never know if it is a true emergency case or if it is t the whim of the ambulance driver.

Regardless, I will still do my utmost to give way posthaste because I do not want it to become a situation where it is an authentic emergency (i.e. someone's parent, sibling, or offspring is in mortal danger) and the vehicles in front do not give way because they think that the ambulance driver might be abusing his right to use the siren and lights.

I think we all need to give the benefit of the doubt to the ambulance and not let our personal assumptions or misled experiences with a few bad apples put others at risk.

Just my humble tuppence.

I completely agree. I'd very much rather give way and be a bit slower to reach my destination, than potentially cause someone's death.

Re the legally being able to run red lights, I think prior to that it was an accepted practice - i've seen one do it before - at working level, and this then just reduces the administrative task of sending a summons then waiving it.

As regards stopping at Green lights to let the ambulance pass, I was given the understanding that we should just drive normally with situational awareness. The driver will make an assessment and do what he feels is required. Of course, if s/he has started to move and is in your way, we give way.

Agreed.

I just came back from Japan. And over there, ambulance ALWAYS have right of way, whether green light red light. Everybody will stop and siam and make space for the ambulance.

The ambulance siren is very loud, so no such thing as never notice one.

Actually, in many countries, drivers will give way to emergency vehicles. We have a long way to go and should work on improving our civil mindedness/graciousness instead of wasting complaining about others not behaving well. Same same...

Actually I thought this was "understood" all the while, but I think this time is to formalise it for good order sake and I heard from the parliament brief that highway code will be updated for this.
