For those who opose the move to grant single parents these incentives..............

The child is innocent.

Do not punish the kid or limit the potential of a child to develop and grow up without financial constraints just because the mother/father committed something stupid.

Thatz all.

then the mum should have aborted. single moms have themselves to blame for being single moms, which also means that they are financially prepared to go through with it if they decide to go ahead. abortion at the early stage the life not formed yet.

If you put it this way dan your mum must be very arm dui after giving birth to you. She could have saved a lot of money.

Looks like the poll result here is inverse of the "official" figures. Makes you wonder who they polled, what questions were in the poll and how the poll was conducted.

But then again i've given up on official poll figures long ago, too easily manipulated.

Aiya, 'official' things will always make you think what they want you to think.

Like they ask why people don't get married. There is no option to say "No money". All the reasons will be "no time" or "not interested". [knife]

Unwed parents to get childcare, infant care leave benefits

Single unwed parents, once left out of childcare and infant care leave will now be entitled to the same benefits as their married counterparts.

Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing announced the news on Thursday in Parliament.

Effective from May 1, single parents will receive six days of childcare leave a year for children below the age of seven, two days for those aged between seven and 12 and six days of unpaid infant care leave annually if they have a child below two years of age.

Single fathers will also enjoy paternity leave.

This comes as other MPs called for more assistance to be given to single mothers in Parliament on Wednesday, with Marine Parade MP Seah Kian Peng asking that unwed parents be treated as "mothers first and singles second".

Chan also said that his Ministry would be promoting adoption in health centres and would make sure that pregnant women who want an abortion have written consent.

Calling the decision to abort a "deeply personal issue" which should be respected, Chan said that he did not believe reducing abortions by increasing adoptions was a solution.
