The best test to see if ur brake disc is wrapped, use a dial gauge. If the workshop use eye power to tell u that, ask him to fly kite.

I drove a 2004 Sunny and have covered slightly over 170k km. Only changed front brake pad once. I have a good, old and reliable mechanic whom I met in 2006 along Sin Ming drive. Have been asking him to check my rear brake disc almost once or twice a year during my motor oil change. Always same answer - No need.

I think I changed my front brake pad at 100k km.

Some experience with front brake pad. Previously, I owned a COE sunny. I replaced the front brake pad after it was worn out. Problem started when i noticed powderly particles on the right front wheel. Went to get my tampines mechinic to resolve problem but failed. In the end, the lead guy even suggest to change more things which can come close to $1k.

Had a friend who owned a Opel MPV. Since most of us are familiar with changing brake pads only, he did the same for the front wheels. Then when he send in for agent for service, agent told him Opel car need to change both the rotor and pad together. I don't understand the logic but my friend was upset and has to change his front wheel rotos and pads. Cost him a bomb. Later he changed to a toyota mpv.

From this discussion, I believe brake disc is seldom change during the 10 years life while front brake pads may need to change once or twice depending on usage.

Yes i agree its unlikely cars need to change brake discs fr their short lifespan here.

Its only when some drivers start to suggest to mech maybe problem is disc n mech take advantage to make more money wil say...yes...yes...better change. Then driver very happy to spend money for nothing n mech also earn more money so e trend started fr mechs to suggest. ....must change disc....otherwise very dangerous.

Knowing many drivers here dun know better wil happily change disc. End up many mechs now always say to change discs cos can earn more.

Many things fr cars mechs wil suggest n driver dun know better wil listen.

Thats why so many mech try to cheat drivers cos our drivers kia su...kia see type.

End up spend money unnecessarily n so happy about it.

After driving for 5 years, not once did the mechanic suggest to change brake disc.. only brake pad every year! I can see that they are rusty but he say its FINE.

It's normal for brake disc to accumulate rust if never drive for a period of time.

Reason is simple. You can't expect brake disc to be perfectly smooth after long usage. I mean the car is exposed to all weather condition, so does the brake pad. Eg, morning start car brake pad rusty due to few days never drive, than also got brake dust that can cause brake pad to have uneven surface.

Ya a mech tried that same trick wh me. Ask me to touch. I see tell him thats normal to hv grooves. He keep quiet look down n carry on to just change my pads.

U just need to drive n brake gently fr abt 100km so yr new pads can seat properly.

After drive as normal once u feel brake pedal firm n positive again. U can chk yr brake fluid n if low just top up wh correct fluid n thats it.

Only if u skim too many times n discs get too thin then u need to change.

I never skim b4 ( although mechs did try to get me to ) n my discs easily last 20yrs n >400km even.

If yr mech dishonest n u listen to everything he ask u to do then yr cost to maintain car wil b two or three times more ex than normal.

If u got too much money...better give all kaki here treat eat seafood better.

Hahaha.

after a normal maintenance servicing, one very famous WS told me i need to change new brake disc because got juttering when braking, i did not have $$ then (latter they say can skim but not so safe) so i decline but on the way out tested the brakes and indeed got 'juttering' or 'metal scrapping noise. Lucky i was on the way to change my shock absorbers at another shop (the first shop quoted me almost 2x more) and i asked him to check out my brakes. After some driving and visual check, he took out a air gun and spray inside the brakes, a lot of dust and even dirt dropped out. Did the same for the others.

Afterwards test the brakes (on small side road ofcourse) it was fantastic, can feel the brake is very firm and hear tryes screeching only. Drove for a few months no issues, next servicing at another WS also no issues with brake disc.

So e 1st ws tried to cheat u by putting all that dirt in yr brakes to make it judder.

So now u all ustand what i mean many ws r basically dishonest n wil try to cheat u if ty think ty can.

Its survival. In SG u do biz...too honest u bankrupt. Only way to make money or survive even is to cheat customers.

SG is maybe one of e cheating capitals of e world. Dishonesy is e name of e game here.

Best part is its so easy to cheat a sporean.

Mechanic should be friend of SPCA, then can collect free dog pee every week for washing customers disc and bearings..... :D If customers want to wash their own personal "ball bearings", mechanic can pass them some free "detergent"... :D :D

Neutral Newbie

I did car service in a workshop, the boss suggested me to replace brake discs, cost about $350 for front pair, my car mileage just 70k, in gentle driving style.

can anyone advise how ofen to change brake discs in normally?

thanks [rolleyes]

Brake is a very important part in your car safety.

It's best you get a 2nd opinion on the stuff..

Usually, if it's very rough, alot of lines, indicate it need to change soon.

PS: I find this video funny..

Would you get down your car and kick his ass?

Hahaha. Yup get 2nd opinion but from an honest mech.

Last time i keep 2 or 3 regular ws. If ws A tell me brake need to change i go ws B n C n cfm. If need i do at ws B or C but never at A.

Like that any ws tell me i need to change something next time he see i got it done at another ws.

If he dishonest he give up cos end up he giving biz to some other ws n he make nothing.

If he honest...he dun mind.
