But if SPC raises prices by a further 2 cents within the next few days to match its competitors, then it's all but a WAYANG! both cases resulted in same price across all brands right how come case 1 is not wayang but case 2 is? ↡ Advertisement

Shell, Caltex and Esso were the first to raise prices for 95RON from $2.17 to $2.20. SPC was the last to raise prices, and instead of following the 3 idiots in riaisng prices by 3 cents, SPC raised prices by only 1 cent

ecneret_eel 1st Gear September 29, 2017 Share September 29, 2017 have been pumping esso, but considering switching to SPC, cos it used to give me more mileage per full tank, only issue is my goodness esso is just everywhere and it's super convenient! It feels better ... you may say it's in my mind, that's how I feel. The rest aren't very different. For the 98s, Esso feels better. For the best feel, it's V Power, but it's not worth the extra cost, unless I visit M'sia..
Victor68 Turbocharged September 29, 2017 Share September 29, 2017 I have mostly pumped SPC because of the discount and POSB credit card rebate. I will pump any brand as long as the discount is better. I also pump as much as possible in JB . So far no issue with whatever I pumped. I am not sure if it is psychological, shell seems to give the engine more power leh.

I am not sure if it is psychological, shell seems to give the engine more power leh. It's mostly psychological. Petrol is petrol, refined by the same process, from the same crude oil. There are some minor differences, if you care to nit-pick. A 95 octane must be at least 95 and above, but obviously no higher than 98, otherwise it'll be sold at a higher price. Different chemistry is added in different amount for cleaning detergent purpose. Then the all important marketing gimmick is applied, in that it's branded. Your engine may perform differently at different time. Sometimes running better (like rainy days when air is cooler and denser), sometimes worse. There are so many variables, but consumers just associate with petrol brand. As long as the production is controlled, verifiable, audited regularly by some authorities, just paying for the cheapest is probably the best idea.

sungeiroad2017 1st Gear September 30, 2017 Share September 30, 2017 I agreed it's psychological. The cars that we have in Singapore, they have it too in Malaysia...why do Msia Merc, BMW, Toyota, Honda etc pump their petrol and still function well for so many years.....I seriously do not think that our petrol is much more superior, although I reckon that our petrol might have some additives added. In general, I think they are very similar.....Let us not be fooled by the marketing gimmicks of the petrol companies!

Well talking about psychological effort, it appears somehow that SPC pricing strategy has a psychological effect on the big boys... Because in the recent adjustment exercise, SPC was the only one who decided to raise by 1¢ instead of 3¢, this probably has a psychological effect on the big boys which caused them to cut back by 2¢ within 2 days after announcing the 3¢ increase on Thursday... :) ↡ Advertisement
