According to a report on the Shanghaiist.com, the pigs are also fed with sand and metal. Activists in Taiwan are trying to stop this ritual. 1-tonne 'megapig' goes on parade TAIWAN - On the sixth day of the lunar new year, the God Pig Festival takes place at Tzushr Temple in Sanxia, Taipei County. During this Hakka festival, people usher in the new year and pray for good luck and blessings for their family. The highlight of the event is a sacrificial ritual where fattened up pigs are offered to the Gods and later displayed outside the temples. The pigs were fed till they are obese and weighing over 1 tonne (around 1000kg). Decorated with flowers and red banners, they are carried into the temples on lorries. During the festival, they are weighed and the heaviest is the winner. Activists in Taiwan are trying to stop this ritual. They say that the pigs' movements were restricted in the closures and were force fed until they became obese. The pigs also became ill and paralysed. An activist says this practice has to stop as it is abusive and inhumane to the pigs. Hotamp 3rd Gear February 21, 2013 Share February 21, 2013 saw the documentary on this taiwanese event......its a religious type of practice suppose to bring good fortune if the owner's pig got selected....they stuff up the skin with dried grass i think . personally i find it gross , but then its their local practice. with sand?
