Jetabout777 1st Gear February 15, 2013 Share February 15, 2013 Hi all, My car's starter motor was changed in 2011 to a brand new unit. However, it gave me problems today and I was advised to repair it. My trusted workshop quoted me an approximate figure of $200-$300 for re-conditioning. Does anyone know a direct source where I can get it re-conditioned at a cheaper price instead? I am amazed at why a starter motor would fail so frequently. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you. ↡ Advertisement

Jetabout777 1st Gear February 15, 2013 Author Share February 15, 2013 Partly due to when u start your engine when the aircon switch is ON. I am actually quite religious in turning off my car's electrics before I turn off the engine. Hence, I don't face the problem of having the aircon or music blasting when i crank the engine. It is really beyond me why the starter motor would fail so pre-maturely.

There is a solenoid that engages e starter motor gear to e flywheel when u turn e key n it crank. If e gear does not disengage fm e flywheel when u release e key e starter keeps turning while u drive n it wil burn out. U sud hear a whining sound if this happens while u r driving. Get e solenoid checked in case its faulty. Ive been driving many years n never had to fix e starter motor b4. It sud not spoil in normal use. Also cranking a hard to start engine fr too long can burn out e motor.

Sorry to bust yr wet dreams but looks like yr trusted workshop has been chopping yr carrot head all these while. For $300 you can get a brand new starter motor. Reconditioning will be typically $50. ↡ Advertisement
