ok. 200km/hr reminds me of the bugis ferrari incident

Exactly. How is driving 200km/h with the very real possibility of slamming into something at that speed any better?

Why joking?

Big open space no other cars what.

At 200 kph already, he can even exit any highway, how to go to open space? Also at high speed, the tyre will give way in no time if you keep turning at one direction. ....

Of course, the spikes/handbrake suggestions are equally unworkable - unless it's OK that the disabled driver gets killed in the process. If that's allowed, there are plenty of options. But this guy is considered an "innocent". When it's a killer or drug dealer or terrorist on the run, they'll use any means to bring him down. All's fair, etc.

on a philosophical aspect of it, they allowed him to drive at a speed that presumably posed a significant danger not only to him, but also to other road users (including the police escorts). In hindsight all went well, but it did bring to my mind the classic runaway train problem.

can we use a heavier but fast vehicle to drive infront of this runaway car, then slowly match the speed, slow down until bumpers touch... then apply brakes on front vehicle with some 8 pots or what to slow the car down?

dont think the renault has a lot of torque right? maybe tyres chwee niah?

Yeah! Box him in with a few squad cars. Those are quite beefy. I see it all the time on TV.

Thanks for that. [:)]

My thinking is that, at high speed if the car get out of control when turning even for huge turns, but it's a big space, so even if he lost control while turning, he still won't hit anything. Then he can regain control and continue.

Even if something happened to him in the open space, it beats having something happened on the roads with other people.

How would anyone turn off the freeway @ 200kph in the first place?

at that speed, dont think its possible to turn off highway...for that matter, if on PIE, sure crash as our expressway is too curvy. Clearing traffic ahead of the car and let it run out of petrol is probably the safest way...Heli idea also dont work as most that can lift heavy load cannot travel that fast and be so maneuverable

Looks like the system in France is very well co-ordinated...from this incident, it seems that all parties worked together to prevent a horrific crash from happening....

if same thing happened in SG or MY how ah? [rolleyes]

I'm willing to wager that most, if not all, of those criticising the driver and offering convenient (albeit completely unworkable solutions) have never actually travelled at 200 km/hr, let alone over it.

I have, and it's fast. Really, really fast. At that speed, things happen at a pace that most normal drivers are simply incapable of reacting to quickly enough.

This applies to a closing speed of 200+ km/hr too, e.g. a runaway car (like this one) bearing down on you at that speed. The only reason the other cars were able to swerve out of his way is because they were also going very fast, so that the closing speed was reduced to something manageable (less than a hundred km/hr). And frankly, considering the standard of driving in Sg, he wouldn't have been so lucky here. Confirm he would've taken at least one stubborn hogger with him to Valhalla.

I think at the point in time,

the police was more preoccupied with setting up road blocks up ahead (ostensibly to prevent more cars from entering the highway)

setting up emergency clearance in Belgium. Though still the same in EU zone, someone had to inform the Belgian police.

setting up a contingency flat tarmac for the fella to donut till petrol ran out? the planners would have to eyeball suitable sites and eliminate a great deal of those because you can hardly afford to meander around narrow carriageways to access such a site. Airport? sure sure like the airport authority is prepared to shut down a runway or two with near zero lead time.

let it be lah dey, those arm chair critics.

BTW how the fiak you know he will end up in Valhalla? you know he is a Nord meh?

:D
