Driver's license

Hello.. Am writing this post to clarify my doubts on the actual procedure for getting a license.

Have heard many rumors from my friends that they recently changed the minimum legal age to 21 instead of 18, is this true?

I want to be able to get a license as soon as possible because my Dad was caught for drink driving just a month ago.. He was bringing out some Chinese clients out for dinner and they had a couple of drinks, on the way home after sending them back to the hotel, he was stopped by a TP, not really sure of the full details but he was told that he is going to be suspended from driving for a year, fine of $3000 and must make an appearance in court.

He is the only person in my family that can drive and not driving would be impossible as my grandmother is wheelchair bound and have to make regular visits to the hospital every once in awhile, taking a taxi would definitely cost a bomb!

Anyway, can anybody please enlighten me on how to get a license?

-I'm 17 this year, is there anyway I can take the theory test beforehand and then take the practical test when I'm 18 next year?

-Do they count the age by the actual birthdate or just the year itself? (My birthday is actually 31st December)

-How long does the entire course last for? Do I have to attend several theory and practical lessons before taking the test?

-How much is the fees for the course/tests?

-Where can I apply for the theory test/practical test?

P.S. I'm doing this on my own accord, nobody is forcing me to get a license as soon as possible to ferry them around. Besides, I have been a fan of cars since my kindergarten days, driving a car is my ultimate dream!

Sorry for the lengthy post, thanks in advance! ^_^

I believe they do count by your birthdate only and not the year.. but you can enquire.

first you have to do your BTT (basic theory)on road rules etc., then FTT (final theory) on actual driving skills etc.

You can apply for the the via the various driving schools.. like Bukit Batok Driving Centre, Singapore Safety Driving Ctr..

be prepared for a wait because the applicants seem to be increasing (esp BBDC).

Would advise you to sign up as a private candidate at the schools and not do your lessons there. its very expensive.

look for a private instructor instead (although you have to pay to use the circuit in the school)

just an estimate.. at least $500-1000 or more needed.

Your dad license will be suspended for a year and he will have to retake everything again from BTT to ATT to Practical.

Currently legal age to take test is still at 18. Please see the answers in red.

-I'm 17 this year, is there anyway I can take the theory test beforehand and then take the practical test when I'm 18 next year? Not possible. They only count the day after your birth date, then you can apply for a BTT. So you have to wait another year.

-Do they count the age by the actual birthdate or just the year itself? (My birthday is actually 31st December) Birthdate. So earliest would be 2 Jan 2014.

-How long does the entire course last for? Do I have to attend several theory and practical lessons before taking the test? Usually about 2-3 months wait for each test (BTT, ATT and Practical). Already considered fast as all theory tests are computerised and will know result immediately. Lessons are depending if you are confident of taking the test, average lesson session minimum would be 20-30 including circuit.

-How much is the fees for the course/tests? Read here

-Where can I apply for the theory test/practical test? All test centres nearest to you for convenience.

If I got a car waiting for me at home, I would also die die want to get the licence as soon as possible.

The rule is still based on birthday on day of TP driving test!

But if the driving center Allow you to enroll before age 18, then quickly go and register and start learning.

Not so sure the basic and final theory need to be age 18 or not.

All can be solved by a simple phone call to those driving centers...or any private instructor.

Good luck.

I agree selling the car now would be a stupid choice, since the COE is so damm high to get another new car in future.

hire a taxi on permenent schedule is cheaper or hire a part time driver may also be cheaper.

dun rush into getting a license cos the result is not guaranteed and getting a license at 17 is not a solution, it could be another set of problem.

you are still young, it's your dad problem and let him handle it and I believe he is more resourceful than hoping his son get a driving license to solve his problem.

The rumour about the age being raised from 18 to 21 has been around for years already. It isn't true.

Haha if they raised it to 21, then the SPF and SCDF won't have enough drivers to crash their vehicles.

I'm considering buying a car. I have a big family.

- Parents (2 people)

- 4 kids (6 people)

- Maid (1 person)

- Grand Parents (2 people)

Would I be able to use class 3 driver license to drive a Mercedes vito 115e 9 passenger for personal family car? Or I must have commercial driver license?
