Because the rich have more money.

If after we allow 10 year 100% loan and the COE is so high, what would happen if we allow 20 year 100% loan? $150K COE?

You will get people that still change cars after 3 years

and people like me who will buy 3 year old cars.

Seems like "young couple wanting to start a family" is the trump card now. Had housing, tax benefits now car, maybe they would like higher bank savings interest for the "young couple with first kid account" plus allocated seats at eateries so that they don't have to fuss over lack of space. Oh, maybe jobs for life with guaranteed increment so that they wouldn't be stressed over $.

Singaporeans should get real.

I completely agree!

They should just give free COEs or discounted COEs

to old couples who actually have kids.

Young couples trying for a kid don't need cars.

They should just book short term hotels or do it in

our beautiful parks like I did.

What happen to school bus? Also, doesn't most kids live quite near to school? Is Singapore so bad, that kids walking a short distance also cannot, just a question. I can understand if the kids are young, but any age 10 and above should be able to get to school themselves. I start going to school by myself by 8. If the traffic junctions are bad, which I admit our drivers ain't the best, can appoint somepeople to marshll the roads.

I do can understand on bad weather, you may want to shelter them to school, & for some reasons, our kids seems to have poor road discipline (run across road, or play while crossing, see too often)

But its still poor reason no matter to use this as a reason to own car in my opinion.

If there is such a category/scheme, the choice of vehicles should be limited to those that fit the purpose of this category.

Such as a TATA or Chery mini van.

I like your idea. And these people are barred from selling their cars or changing one. Otherwise they will have to pay a penalty.

Set aside some COEs for first family car

Financial assistance or a COE discount scheme could also be introduced to help such families cope with the skyrocketing COE prices.

This doctor's argument is weak. Does it mean that there should also be subsidies for the escalating petrol prices? Or discounts for car servicing? Or rebates for insurance?

All suggestions comes with pros and cons, although some are downflat stupid and selfish. But it is impt that we keep the fire going so that pretty Minister Teo knows that this is one of the big concerns to us heartlanders. Hopefully a resolution within the next 2 yrs.... [:p]

Last weekend, I almost went down to pay downpayment for a 2nd hand car, having currently own a car left 2yrs before expire. However, on the last minute, I redo my maths, and seriously, a 9K depreciation does not justify for me to own a "new" car at this moment, factoring in my debts (housing loan, credit card loan, insurance, etc.) This 9K is almost a quater of my annual income or 25% paycut to get a car, minus road tax, insurance maintenance etc... [knife]

Your commitments are going to 'kill' you especially when you mentioned that you have credit card loan. This is a no-no. I would strongly suggest you pay off your credit card loan first as your housing loan and insurance instalments are essential.

Better don't visit the car dealerships - temptations are hard to resist. Glad you got out of it.

Could'nt agree more. Everyone of us should exercise financial prudence, especially in this times of economic instability. Remember the times when we were young, how many of us who wanted the latest video games etc but the prices were beyond our reach. We will find ways to get it; Asking parents for money, saving from our weekly allowance etc. Eventually if we cant, then we go for cheaper alternatives.

Same for these people who keep having COE requests, be it priority for first timers, priority for aging parents. Get one within their financial limit. If the skyrocketing COE is making a new car beyond their reach, there are always other choices such as getting a used one or taking the cab. Same for me, when my tires have outlive their lifespan, instead of opting for Goodyear like what I did the last time round, I got Kumho. Cheaper but still gets the job done. Its a matter of choice and going for the less costly one.

I believe insurance premium will go up when more ppl will claimed against personal injury or whatever reasons should their car were to be crashed beyond repair to compensate for the 40% downpayment as required if they were to get a new car.

The person says that :

"Taking taxis for routine trips is very costly and hard to sustain for an average-income family. Many families with elderly members or those with mental and physical disabilities face the same problem."

Does the person think that having a car will be cheaper?

Or does the person think that they should be entitled to a COE so cheap that it is cheaper than taking a taxi?

Taking taxies will always be cheaper, its just that one feels the cost more because one pays when one completes every trip, whereas for a car, one just drives "without paying" on a per trip basis.

If the problem is getting a taxi, the taxi system should be fixed, maybe have a dedicated taxi booking system for people with special needs, instead of "giving" them an entitlement for a COE or a car.

becoz they tink that they pay the cab, it is rental. but you buy a car, it is "ownership". they forgot that this 10-yr ownership actually no diff from 10 year leasehold.
