Yeah... Not many 3 row SUV to compare in the 1st place. Just that CX9, Fortuner & the conti XC90 & Q7 are some cars with more legroom in the 3rd row. The rest like Santa Fe, Sorento, Outlander & Xtrail all have 3rd rows with very negligible legroom.

Looks like you cannot have the best of both SUV & People mover in one vehicle.

Based on 3rd row legroom, Sorento is actually more spacious than either CX9 (despite the difference in external sizes) or Fortuner.

This was a key metric for me and I would rank mass market models as follows, from a 3rd row legroom perspective:-

- Sorento

- CX9

- Santa Fe/Fortuner

- Outlander

- X-trail

Hopefully there will be more choices later this year if Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008 comes to our shores.

Fortuner is just a poor cousin of the more upmarket Prado.

Am quite surprised that Toyota still insist to produce such fuel inefficient and dreadful interior vehicle that seem to be stuck in the 1990s.

Agreed. CX9 is more refined, more spacious, more powerful AND more fuel efficient - a different class altogether.

Plus there's a $30k CEVs surplus for the Fortuner (such is why it's $180k), so not great value for money.

With all due respect, Fortuner not really in cx9 class and I won't pay $180k for that car. $180k for cx9 also makes me think twice but still some possibility, just my opinion only.

Yes add abit more u get 7 seater land rover disc sport :D

U r talking about new or old fortuner? New fortuner does impress me but too tall and overpriced

I feel cx9 will be the most solid one among the list

The new one. Maybe the asking price result in me having a much higher expectation of the interior design and built quality.

There is a reason why there is a 30K CEVs penalty. And that is not because it has a blistering performance sports engine shone into the bonnet. The engine output is dismal with very poor emission.

Agree there is a lot to like about the CX-9 - looks fantastic inside and out, and is the most powerful SUV on the list, with decent fuel economy.

Will take CX-9 any day of the week vs Discovery Sport - think the Discovery Sport is overpriced and overrated.

Engine wise if not wrong they use 2.5L, the same as camry one. I believe such a big vehicle may not be sufficient

I think Fortuner is 2.7L TR engine family (163hp & 245NM) same same as Hilux, Camry uses 2.5L AR engine (178hp & 231NM) same same as new Alphard. Hmm 2.7L HP output less than 2.5L, very inefficient... no wonder kenna 30k CEV penalty.

Ohh and almost 2 ton car uses rear drum brake???

They sell many in the rest of south east Asia. Do you know that at the 10year scrap. A fortuner is worth at least 10k in body.

Frankly, I very much wanted to like the Fortuner because I owned 2 Camrys before and loved the reliability of Toyotas.

All things being equal, I would tend to pick a Toyota or Lexus ahead of any other brands.

But the mid sized SUV segment is highly competitive, and competitors like Mazda, Kia/Hyundai etc have really picked up their game. And the Fortuner doesn't seem to have the engine, the specs, the refinement or the space to compete on the same level. Just feels one notch below the competition at this price point.

No doubt there are demand for Fortuner parts in SE Asia as it is meant for low end market, it is not sold in international market like North America, Europe and Japan itself. It would have fail big time with those stringent emission requirements.

Paying high premium for a low end market car just doesn't make sense to me. Furthermore, have to pay extra 30k penalty, even after deducting 10k body value, still 20k wasted. I'll rather go for Sorento, cheaper, only 10k CEVS penalty and more advance. Best still go for CX9 if premium is similar. You know you're paying something that competes in the international stage, they are likely to spend more on R&D, design and paying more attention to details.

Maybe can buy a 2nd hand 9yr old Fortuner, one year later get back 10k body value then make more sense.

Actually Fortuner is never the same level. It's the Toyota Highlander. Unfortunately not available here.
