Children delivery package .. pls advise

Dear TS,

Without delivery and post-delivery complications, there is not much difference in terms of price between private and public hospital. Touch wood! if there are any complications, private hospital will most likely to give you a "shock-of-your-life" bill which may be at least 3 times that of public hospital, provided that you have not taken up the "private-package" in the public hospital.

I guess in normal circumstances, you should put more focus on the following 1-year expenses on diapers, milk powder, vaccinations etc rather than the one-off hospital bill.

Nowadays, people are thinking too much.....think here think there, worry this worry that, trying to find zero or low cost solutions to the problems they faced.

I am not trying to be a saint here. I had my 1st child when I was still struggling to survive on a $1600 take-home pay with no bonus and I would say I am still doing fine here.

so, JUST DO IT!

kk delivery shouldn't be any problem obviously.

But yes, waiting times may be longer for your wife's antenatal visits.

But in general, O&G you should always be prepared to wait. Cos if they are delivering kid etc, they may be away from the clinic unexpectedly as well.

but in an uneventful delivery, its probably not much cheaper if u go fully private.

my only advice,

cos my son just delivered in TMC last Oct.

anyway, to cut a mathematically challenging problem short,

we stayed 1 night twin sharing , 1 night single premier

(the price difference is so little compared to the final bill, should be, $250/ night vs $500/ night)

(but then occupancy rate is damn scary.. don't have single room = don't have single room, cos my kid came out at 5pm)

nontheless,

the majority of the charges is doc's fee, hospital fees.

very very very difficult to estimate (trust me, i am a number person)

end of the day, i paid less than 4.5K cash

normal delivery with epi (room already mentioned)

my fren's daughter delivered in Mt E, paid 5K+

marginal increment? maybe.

all the best to your selection.

It's KKH for me.

If there's no complication, any hospital in Singapore is good enough for a simple delivery.

The difference in pricing could be for the service/room.

If there's complication and you have chosen a private hospital, I hope you are well-off enough to pay the bills.

In terms of medical care, mortality rate for newborns in Singapore is very low so you can be assured of the quality of medical care in all the hospitals that you mentioned.

Congrats and Good Luck in you selection !

First of all. Congrats for having a baby soon!

From a friend's real story.. his baby girl was delivered pre-matured at a private hospital. The daily fees to keep her under observation butchered my friend. He wanted to transfer his girl to KKH but hospital said that might be dangerous, LLST maxed out his credit cards.

Packages between KKH and private hospitals may be slight difference of few ks.. but daily rates will be much higher and don't think is subsidised. Maybe you can tell your wife that? Also, I understand KKH have a private dept as well.

Wife just delivered in TMC. IMO, price diff not that big compared to KK.

stayed in 1-bedder 3 nights, C-section op, etc. Total cash paid less than 5k.

The bigger bill comes after the baby goes home... (see doc, diapers, milk, etc) :D

Actually, i dont believe kkh or other public hospital is bad at all. it's just a wrong perception. What you really need to spend a lot is after the birth of your child. Better to use the money for that.

Just to note.... my wife gyn tell us, if baby comes out prematured, just go straight to KKH A&E. Dun go to TMC (the one he is with). There will be doc there to help deliver.

Of course, if you have the Money, no issue to go private.

For my kids :

Elder daughter delivery at Mt Alvenia : 3k+ (2003)

Younger ah boy at Mt E : 10k. (2007)

Now should be more ex for either hosiptal.

Our govt currently(2013) giving 6k per child for the baby bonus is a joke lar!!! [laugh]

hospital fee is just the beginning of the many many expenses...if you just want to keep up with the Joe.

KKH is actually not bad esp the pte suite. For single ward , you can stayover with your wife after the delivery. And the price is still more acceptable than MT E.

Aniway, gynea is more impt that hospital.. i rather spend on a good gynea..

My 3 kids were delivered at Thomson. Service is reasonable but one observation is that the qty/quality of meals has dropped quite a lot. Wife complained the portion is very small & not filling.

My impression was that for the mid range pte hospital ( twin sharing), cost not very different amongst the hospitals like Gleneagles, Mt Alvernia & Thomson. Thought KK is also just as expensive...

TMC ... depend on gynea... some gynea fee is really cheap and may workout to be cheaper than kk pte suite.. however, TMC , has a disadv in handling complication during childbirth as it is not a full hospital.

Think my gynea is one of the doc that dun want to use TMC.. he give us 2 choice MT A or MT E.

If looking within the same type of room and delivery method, actually, the prices between TMC, Gleneagles, Mt E, Parkway East (formerly East Shore) and MT A are not much different. Maybe 100-200 difference.

For private, your wife will be attended to by the same gynae all the way thru to delivery.

For KK, unless you opt for the "private' package, the gynae who delivers the baby will depend on the doc on duty.

My boy was born at Gleneagles via C-section. The 3 night stay 2 bedder + gynae fee came up to around 10k. After medisave deduction, company reimbursement etc, I remember paying around 6k cash.

The most important thing is that your baby is born healthy. Sometimes, congenital disorder can't be detected during the prenatal scans. My boy was diagnosed with Grade 4 Vesicoureteral Reflux when he was 7 weeks old. He was then put on daily antibiotics and was only given the all clear last Feb when he was 2.5 yrs old. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed. My friend's boy had the same problem too. The doc from KK gave him a clean of bill and stopped the antibiotics but the reflux came back 3 months later. Because of this relapse, one of his kidney lost one third of its functionality. He had to go for surgery to fix the defective bladder valve.

Besides KKH, NUH (I believe) is the only other hospital with children A&E.

I have no chance to compare with KKH, but whenever I go to NUH's children A&E, the waiting time is quite negligible.

Once my elder daughter dislocated a small bone in her elbow, doc was there within 10 mins, and problem fixed within another 3 mins.

Both my kids are borned in NUH 8 - 9 years ago.

No headaches at all.

Price wise, it is not as much as the privates.

Service, to me, is very acceptable.

Delivery rooms very solid.

Too bad for both cases, my kids arrived very fast, so their daddy no chance to enjoy the room while waiting for their arrival. Hahaha...

Likely it's more due to PD rather than hospital that the 2 boys are given different treatment.

my children are delivered in Mt A , but i go to Raffles for PD visits. Mainly because I want to get them jab with MMR separately.

Aniway emergency , i will go to Raffles because the queue at public hospital is way too long.

Well said!!! [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup]

people link the output with the brand, but it is more impt to link the actual service provider to the output....KKH is the most well equiped in terms of equipment...trick is to find top few gynae (go some mother forum to see who is good) and appoint her as gynae

like that get the best equipement, best gynae, best rates!!!! [:p]

my wife delivered at Mt Alvernia last year.

have to say the nurses there at St raphael ward are good.

Mt A 1 bedder is better than TMC 1 bedder for fathers definitely ha
