Hamburger Hypersonic April 21, 2015 Share April 21, 2015 How do we know that a tyre would not be too wide for a car? Like it might touch the fenders when turning? Do people turn the steering wheelnto check on the spot? Most often it's not the width of tyre that causes it to rub against fenders, it's the offset of rim that is the cause. ↡ Advertisement
Roberttan 5th Gear April 21, 2015 Share April 21, 2015 Any recommendations if I'm changing new tyres for an estima? Stock is 225/50/18... I'm looking for slightly wider, less harsh and quiet types. is not easy to answer your question If I have to give a responsible answer. As hamburger mentioned , rim offset(rim specification) is 1 of the culprit causing rubbing of fender others like oversize tyre / rim / weak suspension system etc As mentioned base on by knowing if are on Original ( I meant real Original Toyota ) best stick to 225/50/18. but this size has limited choice in the market. otherwise 235/50/18 on most 18inch rim you are cleared from rubbing the fender ( but you may feel little less responsive when take off)
nazerath Turbocharged April 21, 2015 Share April 21, 2015 Is it true that changing tire to a width different from what is in the specs, if got accident harder to claim?

Or really I have to drive around after that to ensure it ain't too wide.. Cos I was thinking of 255/40/19 as my new specs.. Too big??
Hamburger Hypersonic April 22, 2015 Share April 22, 2015 Thanks but offset would lead to a wider tyre ultimately isn't it how you relate that? Just stick to original offset without lowering and all shall be fine. Taya shop that tells you that rim should flush with fenders are BS, it goes to show they know nothing about geometry of car suspension set up.
