SINGAPORE - She first felt a "connection" with her law professor over lunch one day in May 2010, and found his illustrious academic and professional achievements "quite awe-inspiring".

As the weeks progressed, they would meet for lunches and talked online extensively.

It was during this time that her affections for him grew to a stage where she showered him with gifts - including a $740 Montblanc pen as a belated birthday present in May, as well as two tailored shirts worth $236.20 in June.

The woman at the centre of the saga, Ms Darinne Ko, now 23, revealed this to the court yesterday, on the first day of the trial of 41-year-old Tey Tsun Hang.

Tey, who was then an associate professor with the National University of Singapore, is accused of six charges of obtaining sex and gifts from Ms Ko in exchange for giving her better grades from May to July 2010.

In court, he donned black lawyers' robes and chose to represent himself, with the assistance of lawyer Peter Low.

Ms Ko, who was the prosecution's first of 14 witnesses, gave details of how she lost her virginity to Tey on July 24, 2010, in his office at the university's Faculty of Law.

Averting her gaze from Tey as she spoke in the witness stand, Ms Ko said softly: "It was my first time and it was over pretty quickly."

The incident took place about a week before she left Singapore for a six-month exchange programme in the United States. The couple professed their love for each other on that occasion, she added.
