[10 cars pileup @ ECP] This is why tailgating is discouraged

For those who likes to tailgate..this is why its recommended to keep a car length's distance for every 10 km/h of speed travelled

So travelling on ECP with 90km speed limit, every car must be at least 9 car lengths apart? [laugh]

I always try to keep a safe distance from the car infront. But seriously no use one... out of 10 time, 9 times behind some flashy car or even taxi will tail gate until very close forcing you to close the gap.

This is ugly side of driving here...few years back the situation not so bad.

Yes, a gap of 2-3 seconds between two adjacent cars are required for safe driving. It looks laughable given the situation in Singapore but if you apply your mind, you will know the math. If all the cars are moving at 90 kmph and having this gap is not going to lengthen your journey time. If the overall speed slows down to 60 kmph, then the gap can be reduced.Luckily Singapore does not see snow. I wonder what will happen with the kind of tailgating happening here, if there is a bit of snow and ice, where the safe distance increases to 6-8 seconds.

 

I for one don't get perturbed by such antics of tailgaters but follow the safe driving, as well as if I have to brake, I brake in stages so that the driver behind is warned in advance. Sure, I might wear out the brake pads a 1000 km ahead of its scheduled replacement, but it is better than being in an accident.

 

This accident is a classic case of irresponsible tail gating, not by one or two drivers but by ten of them at the same time!!! Laws of nature cannot handle such a group at the same time.

 

Feel sorry for them, but hope the drivers learn a lesson or two from this accident on safe distances.

No need to keep 9 car length away. With our modern car and technology, 2 car length for 90km/h is good enough. Anything happen, just slam onto the brake, the car will stop within next 50m. Of course, tua lorry have to keep bigger distance due to the brake use and set up of the lorry. Other than that, saloon can just keep 2 car length away and maintain high vigilance.

Can you back it up with science please? There is a specification of 60-0 stopping distance which defines how much distance a car needs to slow down from 60 mph to a complete stop. And it all around 110-120 feet for the modern cars in perfect test conditions. Laws of physics cannot be tampered with. A 2000 kg moving mass at 90 kmph has so much of energy to be dissipated to come to a complete halt. No amount of magic can make it happen in two car distance. And on top of this add the variables like the type of tyre, road surface condition all of which increases the stopping distance. And on top of this add the reaction time of the driver. The performance numbers published cleverly exclude the reaction time. Please do not presume that modern cars can defy physics. How much ever vigilant you are, and you apply brakes at the right time seeing the accident, you still need 120 feet to stop with out banging the car ahead.

 

If you want to drive safely, these are non-negotiable. Period.

Wonder have anyone ever kept a 9-car length distance from the vehicle in front when traveling at 90km/h?

 

If I keep a 3-car length, others will cut in. Then I keep 3-car length again but others cut in again. This will continue until eventually I'll be the last car in the lane.

 

Why make yourself so difficult? I would rather travel in the slower lane and slower speed while enjoying the drive, which I do on my usual day driving......... [drivingcar][laugh]

At least 10 cars will be at the respective workshops when 2013 arrives.

 

To be fair, the first car owner was the only innocent party even if he or she did an emergency brake.

 

All the rest behind simply did not observe a safety stopping distance.

Bro, that's a dangerous assumption... if the car in front has better braking power and better tyre grip than your car, i.e. it can stop in shorter distance than your car, you'll be sorry.... The two second rule is a much better/safer way (and well proven) to gauge...

All the road hoggers will sure come in to this thread and start talking about how safe they have been driving. Pls stay clear of lane 1! U could keep 10 cars distance and no one will be bothered.

Maybe first car from workshop and did it purposely? Or maybe a kuku driver slam brake so hard to slow down for a pool of water?...

siao bo.. keep 9 car lengths at 90kph.. i will overtake the bugger who does that like a boss without a guilty conscience and i will have a good look at the driver.

 

If the driver is a female, then i will look a bit more and forget it.

 

If the driver is a male, then...
