Celicar Turbocharged December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 Just did my servicing and I'm quite sure it is not my imagination, but the engine revs seems to be noiser and not as refined now. Nothing has changed in terms of sound insulation, so what could have affected the sound? Engine oil? I changed belt also, could that be the culprit? A bit disturbed by the situation. Plus just now park already can hear ticking sound coming from under the car, spooked enough to actually stoop down to see if something wrong or got bomb. Wah lao eh.... ↡ Advertisement

Kianbeng Clutched December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 Too loose belts or over tightened belts could cause squealing or grinding sound. Perhaps you can try to describe what sound you are hearing after the servicing? Does the sound changes when you rev your RPM? But if your car comes with a belt tensioner, then the problem of belt noise could be less likely?

It is as if some sound insulation has been removed (I've not removed any sound insulation). But no unusual sound, just louder. I just tried to read up on timing belt issues, ticking noise after engine stop, nothing seems to correspond to my situation, which I suppose is a good thing. It seems a serious issue if timing is indeed out, and I really hope it is not the case.
2BDriver Hypersonic December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 (edited) I am thinking about your belt pulley because worn bearing cause friction with noises along moving parts, it's no high cost to ask your mechanic to confirm the noise source. Please check it asap before major issue occurrence. Edited December 4, 2012 by Fongmy

2BDriver Hypersonic December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 (edited) Make sure you drive slow with preventive measures of car unexpectedly break-down (touch wood) It happened with me once, I was driving along PIE near to Eunos exit, the abnormal noise from engine compartment was heard suddenly loud and clear, immediately reduced my speed and exit eunos, drove slowly towards car workshop, the mechanic found my belt pulley faulty and replaced new one with back to normal engine note. Hope yours is as simple as mine before. Edited December 4, 2012 by Fongmy

This morning I switch off radio to listen to engine more carefully, ok the sound is louder when I move off from standstill, but the cruising speed sound is more or less same, so it seems that the difference is only when moving off from low gear. I was careful not to step on throttle harder than I usually do, in fact I purposely try to move off slowly. Other than that, I went out of the car to listen to how engine sounds when idle, sounds normal. Hope it is just my mind.

Have you recently replaced the engine oil other than your usual servicing oil? eg: from 5w40 to 0w30 etc.??? probably this could be the reason. The engine oil may take a few rounds to settle in. Try to monitor and see how.
Watwheels Supersonic December 5, 2012 Share December 5, 2012 If ticking sound coming from the engine it's the valve tappets/valve lifters that needs replacement. Nothing to do with your servicing. If you need to know more just Google.

The ticking was after I switched off engine and was walking away from the car, then I heard it, not when the engine is running. I googled and it seems it is expand and contract of metal. I will see if this is persistent, this morning dun have but if it comes back I may have to do a bomb sweep.

Can advise which kind of oil (eg. 5w40 / 0w30) will cause engine to be less 'noisy' and sound smoother when accelerating?

Dan the ticking is engine knocking. Carbon buildup inside the engine.
