Bcos both Temasek Holding has shares in both companies.

 

It's just trying out different business models.

 

They still very much in control of all the taxi on the road. Maybe except transcab.

 

Banning doesn't help, but harnessing the power of technology will help them to implement on the current fleet if there is a need to level the field in the future.

Let individual own the taxi and get a licence to operate. Cut off these corporation big CEO pay and directors pays. Taxi is just another trade, like hawker.

You are mostly right.The managers are sitting doing nothing but collecting salary for an easy life.But still some regulation needed to protect consumers.Else consumers will be exploited and abused.But currently it is more likely the office holders not doing job.No point keeping them and the system.

Regulation via licensing cut off those middle man who are just fat bums with connections. If LTA scholars lag ideas, throw out here and the MCF members can provide them valuable tips.  with a thousand pages here

Taxi rental slashed. Taxi companies buay tahan liao with so many empty taxis lying around collecting dust.

 

But that one only for those who got no relief driver... End up those who rent these taxis are those who don't drive much. IMO they reduced the rental for those with no relief cuz they don't need to meet the mileage requirement anymore, so can afford to rent out all the taxis even if all these drivers don't have relief. Previously when they got to meet the mileage requirement, hard for one driver to hit that minimum mileage.

SG govt also can't fight technology.  Finally, the era of Comfort and SMRT sitting there and printing money using their paper taxi licences while doing little to solve the taxi problem is coming to an end.  

 

Taxi drivers can move on to Uber or Grab or Transcab and perhaps earn the same or less (more competition now due to rising supply of uber/grab cars, the fat cats get moved to another position to manage a business with less competition. Win Win.

SMRT launches new scheme allowing drivers to rent taxis by the hour

SINGAPORE: Transport operator SMRT on Thursday (Jan 26) announced a new taxi sharing scheme that will allow drivers to rent its taxis by the hour instead of a daily rate, in an effort to entice more inactive taxi drivers to get back behind the wheel. 

 

Under the scheme, drivers will have to book a vehicle for a minimum of three hours. Taxis will be parked at selected locations for rent to drivers with a valid Taxi Driver Vocational License (TDVL). 

 

During the initial phase, drivers will be able to pick up and drop off taxis at about 20 locations in the North and Central part of Singapore.  

 

Currently, about 95 per cent of SMRT's 3,500 taxis are on the roads and the operator says the remainder will be channelled to the scheme. However, this could be increased if there is more demand.  

 

Rental rates will range from S$5.80 per hour to S$12.80 an hour. A promotional rate of S$3.80 an hour will also be on offer for about a month. Full-time drivers currently pay between S$108 and S$125 to rent a taxi per day, before incentives. 

 

SMRT Taxis said the roll-out is part of its efforts to offer drivers greater flexibility, while trying to increase taxi availability on the road. 

 

Compared to driving full-time, SMRT Taxis said drivers will have the flexibility of not having to buy season parking for the vehicle or find a relief driver to share the cost of the rental. 

 

"The scheme also allows us to tap on a large number of inactive TDVL holders and have taxis on the road according to commuter demand," said Mr Tony Heng, managing director for SMRT taxis and private hire services, adding that an estimated 50 per cent of the 100,000 TDVL holders are actually inactive.

Taxi and uber are the same lo, how come taxi can be so special? They mean children no need to be protected when taking taxi?
