Their local RMA agent is Flextronics located in Chai Chee. Google online for their RMA procedure. you need to register for RMA and print out RMA labels. I personally went down and handed over my faulty unit as per instructions and a courier delivered a refurbished unit about 2 weeks later.

thanks

do you need to provide the receipt or can they trace thru the series no?

hmmm as far as i can remember, when i registered for warranty, they traced the batch manufacturing date for my Elements SE (from the serial number) and it was found to be within the nominal warranty period so they didn't ask me to provide proof of purchase.

If you're looking to recover the data and the disk is dead, be prepared to shell out a thousand bucks or more for the data recovery..

The WD RMA process returns u another blank HDD as replacement, not the data in your spoilt disk.

Not sure what you mean. What has hard disk never shutdown got to do with voiding warranty ?

the hard disk was running non stop for a few months

they said the hard disk was not design to do that

hence warranty void

we were crunching data through from the hard disk

Think Chai Chee no more already. Changi side.

Yeah, it's now at Changi. The Pasir Panjang one is the local distributor Achieva. Go through the RMA at Changi is much faster than sending to Achieva, unless the HDD is past it's original manufacturer's warranty of 3 years and into the extended 2 years warranty by Achieva.

Yes, consumer class hard disks are not meant to be run 24/7. Especially external hard disks. And never treat external hard disk as the only backup, as it can actually fail easily.

it is not the 24/7 part that is the killer. it is the loading and the heat generated. server enclosure HDDs obviously see alot more action than a PC HDD. Also, it was not mentioned whether a proper server enclosure with proper cooling was provided. Note that server cooling is designed with the intent of 24/7 and high loading operations. Anyone could operate his PC as a makeshift server. Also, there are enterprise level HDDs that could have been bought.

However, i find it disturbing that an Acceptable Use Policy is not clearly communicated to users and would be users in a transparent manner, be it for educational purpose or for warranty related concerns.
