Something is off for your kind of wear. It's about time you change your rear tyres too. I know the recommendation is 2 years, but I usually stretch to 3 year if the tyres permit. Just changed all 4 on my mom's Punto earlier today myself actually. Edit: Saw you did an alignment two weeks ago. No need liao. Elfenstar 3rd Gear October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 How about swop with the spare tyre? Keep the bald tyre as spare instead. In mechanical terms, there is no big deal to just change one tyre. The differences in rolling DIA and grip is not going to affect a normal car on the road. Not entirely true. Yeshe Turbocharged October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 Hi all My front left tyre getting bald soon....but my front right tyre still has plenty of thread, not sure why the in-balance wear for both tyres even thou both were changed at the same time in Jan 2011. Even my rear 2 tyres (used almost 3 years liao) still has plenty of thread. Question is: can I just buy 1 new tyre to replace the front left? Is this advisable in terms of safety considerations and will that cause any drive-shaft damage to my car? Thanks. how come uneven wear? got do balancing? The compound is hardened over time and this affects the grip. Budget tight lah....so if possible, trying not to change all 4 tyres at one go... Whether or not it's actually "adjusted to correct liao" is hard to say without printout. I'd personally get another alignment done (with printout) after the new tires are put on, but that's me. I did told the mechanic one side tyre more botak than the other side...and he said "try drive for about 5,000 km and see got improvement or not".... Yeobh 4th Gear November 1, 2012 Share November 1, 2012 (edited) The next time if yr car fails the bi-annual inspection on wheel alignment , which is actual a wheel side slip test. That mean yr car is either pulling to the right or left ( lateral movement) Yr wheel angles maybe set right as per manual but your rid still fails the side slip test - this is because both wheels are developing different rotating forces resulting in the pulling. The cause can be due to or compound by wheel pattern wear, wheel bearing wear, tie rod wear, cv joint wear. The pulling force can be neutralised by just slightly adjusting the toe angle and final test by via a side slip tester. I thought the system should be for rain to run to BOTH sides, not just left, correct? Then left front will wear faster if you travel heavily on the left lane, but right front should wear faster if you travel heavily on right lane, right? My uncle did that few years back. 1 new tyre with 3 old expiring tyres. on dry road no issue but one day heavy raining he did a brake on a straight but flooding road. The car spin and hit the lamp post. Luckily he suffer only minor whiplash and has recovered but the car was total loss. IS NOT A WAste if you want your driving SAFE and peace of mind.
