Multiple visits to dental no time off given?

I was told time off is under mgr's discretion.

 

I need to visit dentist 3 times to complete a crowning procedure. My mgr keeps asking me to take MC but i told HER no MC is given for crowning. I just need to take time off to see the dentist as my dentist only work during office hrs. I have a time chit to show also.

 

I think maybe she petty or stingy, came and told me time off is mgr discretion and wont be fair if i have to take 3 times. 3 times = 1 day already.

 

those who r bosses/mgrs here, are you ok if ur employee needs to take time off to complete a procedure? its not like i take time off to bring my kid to see a doc.

 

i also told her im ok to take MC but some docs dont give u MC but time chit because they dont see the need to. Whats wrong w her? I also said that time chit allows me to return work and my colleagues do not need to backup me for entire day.

Personally, I will take leave though I normally give my staff time off if it's not frequent and not too disruptive and hopefully, they will know how to zi tong.

Your boss is rite. 1 time time off. 2nd and 3rd time go apply half day leave.

This is the problem with our work culture. And we are talking abt work-life balance recently?

time off is how many hours? what time to what time?

I personally takes half day leave to go for dental appointment.

None of my colleagues come to me to ask for time off for dental appointment.

Maybe they have good teeth.

I understood that time offs are privileges not entitlements.

 

I think TS is stretching the tolerance though, I will be paiseh and ask to take leave instead. lol

my time off is about 3hrs away from office time.

 

i tot as long as time chit is given, it is not really a time off...since im going for dental procedure.

 

dentist also told me no MC for crowning but can give time chit so i tot time chit.

 

i went polyclinic for blood test result, doc initially dont give me MC and said i only need time chit...imagine i have to force him to give me MC because of that. Personally i wont take AL to replace a time chit given officially by doc.

It's more of being honest and fair rather than operational as staff can still take leave which will be even longer since it's either half or one day leave thingy vs time off.

 

But then, how many honest and fair humans around now? It's like common sense is quite uncommon now.

 

Think there's also a role example senior management play as we all know in many companies, management staff are abusing these themselves. Example like taking french leave, time off, early off, (to do private things, nothing to do with company or business golf) claiming taxi fares while they are given company car (company car let wife/gf/mistress use), etc.

 

To me, work life balance means giving more respect to staff after office/working hours, i.e. management should not expect staff to be 24/7 attending emails and should as far as possible avoid sending emails to staff at odd hours (what the hell are they trying to prove?), unnecessary phone calls; nothing to do with giving time off for dental/medical. One is expected to expand his/her leave entitlement for such acitivities.

if she were to upfront w me about using time chit, at least i will officially take MC. I dont want to take MC as suggested by mgr and then colleagues talking behind saying why crowning can take MC? if im going to take MC for every small thing, IM OK AS WELL but i dont want ppl to talk behind not knowing my mgr actually encouraged me to take MC.

Sorry mate, time chit is not the same as MC. MC entitles you to be absent from work (but not from attending court cases as stated), time chit simply is a third party proof that you were at the doctor's premises during the stated timing (and that you are not skiving).

 

Your manager is right that 3 time-off of 3 hours each, constitutes one full day of absence. Time off is really the manager's discretion, and it's not an entitlement. It really depends on your relationship with your manager, and your general performance. Most reasonable managers will not mind giving time-offs if the staff has been putting in extra hours every now and then, or is an efficient worker.

 

Imagine if everyone demands time-off to do whatever they want, and yet comes to work and goes off on the dot, or churns out minimum work output, who is going to do the work?

To prevent people talking behind, just take leave lah. Leave is your entitlement. Further, if it's half to 2 days leave, there's no reason needed to be given normally.

 

I don't question my staff if they are not taking AL for a consecutive of less than 3 days.

i think what she is trying to tell you is.. if really so serious, get a MC...

 

3hrs is quite long actually.... half day is 5hrs

nothing is wrong with her.

 

she's entitled to her opinion that time off is a privelege not an entitlement.

 

if you feel so strongly then verify the company's policy with HR.

IMO, this is all in the emotional bank balance of your boss and yourself. Between my boss and I, such issues, small, non issue. Go ahead and take. She knows I am honest. Also considering i NEVER take MC and that i go the extra mile always. Build that relationship with the boss and trust is of essence here.

 

I, do my part and NEVER abuse the system. I am a responsible worker!

 

Case in point, she had to chase me home once, but I still had sth urgent and promised her I will go home once settled. Such is the due diligence and responsibility you place on the task given upon you
