How to restore shine in body paintwork?

Fren just bought a 2006 car, both AA and trusted regular workshop assessed it and said the 45,000km mileage was genuine based on their inspection. The puzzling part is that the paintwork looks really shiit! It looks like someone has used dish washing detergent to bath the car, it looks almost matt! There are hairline scratches, or rather fine cracks here n there.

Workshop said need a respray coz no amount or wax + polish can salvage the shine [:(]

Any advice if there are other methods to restore the shine? Many thanks in advance. The quote fir respray is about 1.5k for the forester. [:)] reasonable?

1.5k sounds about there to me. If you want to try, bring to a professional groomer (has to be one that can do paint restoration/paint correction, not they typical carpark groomer type) to see if they can restore the paint. Will prob cost less than that respray. Don't be surprise that ppl use dish washing detergent to wash their cars, i've seen it a few times liao. Yesterday i just saw someone use bathing soap to wash his car (with rainwater also).

Look around fr better quote. If u paint same colour its cheaper.

Since paint so bad it might need alot of prep work n increase e price.

Let us know what u managed to find.

Cheers.

You can get your friend to drive over to Imperial 1 and let them take a look. They do paint restoration works.

You can weigh the cost benefits of the following solutions:

1) Paint restoration

2) Respray entire car

3) Complete car wrap

If you source thorough enough, you will be able to find spray paint workshops that do entire cars for a cheap cheap price, but no guarantee on the quality lah...

A good estimate for whole car respray will be $2000.

from the description, the lack of lustre suggests the clear coat is gone. the cracks and hairline scratches described therefore suggest that these are lacerations on the base coat. how to restore?

makes more sense to sand down and do one proper coat and then one clear coat.

Normally clearcoat gone still can save la. Just that it will become dull again very soon unless you keep waxing the area. Recently polished a very old civic with the clearcoat gone in some areas. After polishing I used opticoat to protect the paint and now it looks glossy.

your opticoat is as good as a clear coat? you still got to salvage your gg base coat too, remember?

Almost. 2 months so far. Still beading well and glossy. The base coat is still there. Unless you mean its so bad that you can see the primer or metal already. If its just dull then it should still be ok. Now trying to see how long it can last.
