So if I use this I just take the HDD out of my old desktop and slot it in this, then use the supplied USB connection cable to connect to my new desktop and then I can transfer all my photos and videos at USB 3 speed???

At the moment I have a copy of some of my photos on a laptop  which files them in Picasa which is no longer being updated so I'm trying to use Google Photo but so far it has taken 3 hours to just upload just 500 photos and I have thousands.

huh. one time transfer only and you want to buy a 55 dollar thing?

rightfully if you know what you are doing, you can just install the old hdd on your new desktop. Then either transfer the data to your new hard disk or just use the old hdd as a storage. The wires/connectors needed for this is practically FOC

Now that you mentioned it, he doesn't even need to buy the cables.

Just use from the CD-rom drive first.

After all the data is transferred, change back and throw the old hdd away.

Many gurus here. Can help? If I transferring around 80gbs of photo library from a old macbook pro with USB 2.0 to new macbook, would it be faster using portable ssd, as compared to hdd or thumb drive?

Just use thumb drive. It is the most convenient.

80GB only.... Don't need to worry about how fast or slow. At most let it run overnight.

Another option is to have both MacBook on the same LAN, setup shared folder and transfer via network..

U reading it as a drive on win explorer?

Go to for example F: -> windows folder -> users -> your user name -> then you will find my pictures and my videos folders there.

Alternatively use windows search on that drive, eg *.jpg or all videos/pictures option ticked.

Yeah, reading it a drive.

I know I'm doing something wrong because the HDD is 500Gb but the drive is only showing 130GB.

I'll try what you suggest.
