From Yahoo : US man dies minutes after winning cockroach-eating contest

London, Oct 9 (ANI): A man from Florida, who won a cockroach-eating contest, died moments after he downed off more live bugs than around 30 other contestants.

Edward Archbold, 32, became unwell shortly after the contest ended and he collapsed in front of the venue, the Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, Florida, the Mirror reported.

According to the police, none of the other contestants became ill.

Archbold was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Currently, authorities are waiting for port-mortem results to determine the cause of death.

"We feel terribly awful," store owner Ben Siegel, who added that Archbold did not appear to be sick before the contest, said.

"He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice," he said, adding that Archbold was "the life of the party."

A statement from Siegel's lawyer said that all the contestants signed waivers "accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest." (ANI)

Another report from Reuters: Florida man dies after eating roaches and worms in contest

(Reuters) - Authorities are investigating what caused a Florida man to collapse and die after consuming dozens of roaches and worms to win a roach-eating contest that featured a python as the grand prize.

Edward Archbold, 32, beat out several other contestants who competed for the exotic reptile at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, Florida on Friday night, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.

But Archbold fell ill soon after the contest ended, according to the sheriff's office. He collapsed in front of the store and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Law enforcement said no other contestants reported medical problems after the contest.

Detectives are waiting for autopsy results to determine Archbold's cause of death.

correct me if i'm wrong, there is nothing written on the cause of death. it could be a case of choking on his own vomit, for e.g.? personally, i don't think eating roaches would kill a person. well, at least, the rest of the contestant are fine after the contest. guess it is just a freak case.

but still, whatever the case is, i guess the participants are just going for the attention, with a whole lot of attitude but zero brain matter.

Those are lucky? corkroaches are known to have foreign pathogens, etc all over them. They ride over faeces, and dirty matter, picking all sorts of unknowns. that to me, is unknown and can be fatal

...the roaches most likely domesticated and free of the bacterias.

well, i guess that's the only right thing to do if i'm the organiser of this sort of event (not like i would organise though...) the roaches would be the type that are bred for a purpose. having an indemnity signed by other party doesn't mean the organiser is protected against law suits. they would be careful on what the contestants ate. i don't think they would use the 'regular' roaches found at the dumps.

then again, i could be wrong...

i ever watched a reality show in australia before where the contestants compete in stunts to win $50k, one of which was to eat live BIG cockroaches. Man the cockroaches there are much bigger and looks harder than those here. When they put them into the mouth and bit, the white juice spewed out of their mouth and the contestants looked to be in agony. i was like feeling nauseas when i watched it. yucks !!
