Ya how come services in Singapore become more difficult for Singaporeans?

I find myself having to speak in whatever language the service staff use instead of the other way around.

well...............things are changing lor........... [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Since when?

Going by your logic, then at ALL times at ALL service outlets in Singapore there must be someone to speak

English

Malay

Chinese

Tamil

We have four official languages - why must chinese get "special" treatment that must be someone to speak it?

English is the lingua franca of singapore - so long as there is someone that speaks competent english, that should be the only requirement

Generally speaking he is correct..............in SG........because of our multi races.........we used to have different races working in the services sector.........this actually cut down alot of miss communications..........now it just so happen that the lady is a PRC............if the lady happen to be a malay old aunty.........the result would be the same..........

Given the fact that you grow up in an english speaking country................where mayb english is the only language spoken........it is understandable that you would assume that so long as there is someone that speaks competent english, that should be the only requirement...........but that is not the case in SG............where multiple languages are use....

if you may take a look at most gov sector.........all posters are still printed in 4 languages...............all gov information are also printed in 4 languages.........even the MRT announcements are done in 4 languages..........

Yup there's a PRC involved in this scenario...so there's nothing wrong...

remember when we only have english signs in our MRT stations...there was a big hooha on it...tot the signs supposed to be the 4 languages?

Also, Singpost last time did have locals working there and they speak multi languages as well as dialects...nowadays almost 90% counter staff all pinoys...expect local old aunties/uncles to speak english/tagalog? [shakehead]

yah..............i remember before the renovation done to the JP branch...........there was a chinese man......a malay aunty..... a malay uncle and a indian man there........flow was faster because there was no delay..........the counters knew what they were doing and there was no language breakdown........after the reno..........they were all gone.......i would believe there were as many PRC who went to the outlet as now....................and now it takes forever to stand in the queue i think..........the 30 mins I was there...............the queue seem to be of the same length........... [:(] [:(]

This is where no other countries can easily replicate a multi cultural society, not even Malaysia. And mono culture people like Darryn will never understand in his lifetime, maybe his kids would. Its not even just about the language, its learning to appreciate diversity and respect other races being different from yours.

hey i like this post

but for Darryn he got a point too as most of the time English is the universal language of communication

why singapore prefer English to be taught and learn compare to the national language is because we want to be globalise

why china insist speaking their lingo mandarin is because the whole world depends on them now so like it or not we got to adapt to them not the other way around

Sorry to bring up this thread but just needed to get this out and probably shouldn't start a new thread

I have a registered item due for delivery today/tomorrow and when I checked the status online, it was undergoing some further processing at the Jurong Point branch, where the sender posted the item and it also happens to be the nearest post office to my residence.

As I needed the item rather urgently, and that no one will be at home within their delivery window any given day, I called up Singpost to request that I pick up the item from WHEREVER it may be this evening.

Was told that they are unable to accede to my request and delivery will be attempted either tomorrow or on Monday. Made it very clear to the CSO that it would be a complete waste of both my time and the postman's time because no one would be at home and that it is clear that I can only collect the item at least one working day upon receiving the delivery note (all in all I would only be able to collect the item MYSELF at the post office some time next week). So wouldn't it make sense for everyone that they hold the delivery and I pick up the item personally this evening?

Pinoy CSO went "sorry that is the way it is".

pinoy... hmmmmm... think very soon we will not be hearing their voice over the phone liao unless Singpost outsource their call centre to Ph. http://www.rappler.com/nation/25745-fewer-...gners-singapore

I recently called them about my package and I made the pinoy repeat about 4 times what he's trying to tell me.

I told him either he can speak to me in an accent that I can't understand many times, or he can just simply speak slowly once.

That was fun cuz I got time to burn. Will be waiting for my chance again to call them.
