Gee 1st Gear September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 big digging project once and for all? more congestion coming that might affect commuting. --- Singapore Power to build cross-island tunnels for electrical cables by Woo Sian Boon Updated 10:54 AM Sep 17, 2012 SINGAPORE - To minimise public inconvenience due to road-digging works to replace or maintain electricity cables, Singapore Power is embarking on its Transmission Cable Tunnel Project, in which two cross-island tunnels will house the island's extra-high voltage electricity transmission cables. The tunnels, which will be constructed 60 metres underground, will facilitate faster and more efficient maintenance and replacement of cables. SP has awarded six contracts to five construction companies for the project. The five companies are Hyundai Engineering, Nishimatsu Construction & KTC Civil Engineering and Construction, Obayashi Corporation, Samsung C & T Corporation and SK Engineering & Construction. Construction for two 35km long tunnels - the North-South and East-West - will begin at the end of the year, and continue until 2018. One of SP's largest infrastructure undertakings to date, the S$2 billion project will provide power to more than 1.3 million commercial, industrial and residential customers in Singapore. The announcement was made by managing director of SP PowerGrid Sim Kwong Mian and deputy managing director of tunnel projects Michael Chin this morning. --- http://www.todayonline.com/Hotnews/EDC1209...ectrical-cables ↡ Advertisement

Tayspiderx 3rd Gear September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 2 billion not a small sum which could hav been better use to develop renewable energy than some fancy underground cables. IMo Singapore not so big a country how abt doing submersible cabling around the island instead to save cost...
Watwheels Supersonic September 18, 2012 Share September 18, 2012 Notice how the timeline of the construction coincide with the thomson line? The trains are not running on air it's gonna need plenty of power supply. I can't imagine if there's a power failure again. Look at it as an upgrade to part of the infrastructure. $2bil is spent over long term of usage and not just for one off event like the YOG. That was really a waste for nothing. Neost 6th Gear September 18, 2012 Share September 18, 2012 This project has long term benefits. Imagine, all the cables will be hid from our sight. The whole place looks much more present. To get what I mean, take a look at the overhead power and communication cables all over Hanoi, Vietnam. Also, all future maintainance work will be done in the tunnel which is weather proof. Hence, not only there is be less digging, works can be completed much faster

Gee 1st Gear September 18, 2012 Author Share September 18, 2012 for $2b the electric wire tunnel supposed to last 120yrs ley. and since the tunnel will be much deeper than MRT lines, actually was wondering why didn't create road tunnel cum wire cum mrt all at one go instead. and who knows, even develop an underground sub city. not so much expansion NSEW with international boundaries, going up (or down under) eventually will be the only way to go. But yeah, cost wise will eventually be passed down to us.

If you lay the cabling within the MRT train tunnels, how are the sub contractors going to do their cabling work? Unless the MRT tunnels were commissioned with a secondary tunnel running alongside or maybe there is a service entrance enabling access.
Detion 1st Gear September 18, 2012 Share September 18, 2012 Underground utilities tunnel like these 2 cable tunnels will help to better manage our underground utilities infrastructure. It will be easier to repair damage cable, easier for the companies to check for damages. It will cost more in initial investment but it will reduce running cost as well. These tunnels will reduce the complexity of our already very complex utilities infrastructure. It will reduce damages to cables caused by excavation, reduce the need for diversion and reduce the time needed to trace for the damage area. As for why the tunnel cannot use existing MRT tunnel is that MRT tunnels are not big enough and also these cables are going to the Substations which are not always located near a MRT station. Furthermore, these cables are very sensitives to electromagnetic field and MRT are known to produce high level of electromagnetic field.
