they based it on history like when the bapok admiral cheng he claimed lands far away as china property. anyway, distance is not the issue. pedra branca is ours despite it being near malaysia as it was administerd by singapore since colonial times. christmas island was singapore but sold away as too far away and costly to administer.

Incorrect and your reference to Zheng He is totally unrelated.

His expedition was not to expand China's territory.

If the Emperor wanted to, he easily could have done so with an order to Zheng He's fleet and its troops onboard to forcefully invade any of 20+ countries he visited - China simply was not interested in those overseas adventure.

Once I was also puzzled why US government give Diaoyu Islands to Japan in 1972 knowing full well the Chinese had registered the island since 15th century -

later then I realise in during that period, before US-China formalised tie in 1979, the US was still struggling with Vietnam war, had engaged China in Korean war earlier, does not recognize PRC and was deep in Cold War with USSR....

Those factors played a major part in US decision to give the Islands to Japan, regardless of historical facts.

During that same year (1972), both PRC and ROC officially declare ownership of the islands after US past the above decision.

US has always played the divide-and-conquer card. their plan has always been to get the countries or parties in a region to get into conflicts or standoffs. Although they formalised relationship with PRC, they continued to support ROC all these years and the aim was to sell weapons to ROC, make a quick buck and gain a hold over PRC.

imo..the U.S planted the seed of discord in order for Asia not to be united..its in their interest to encourage and make war as 78% of global arms deals are dominated by U.S and it drives their economy..there is a saying "war is good for business"

With 78% of the market, it goes without saying arms business is one of US's the key income - just to cover their trillion $ debt (excluding interest).

For what? Oil.

So to sell their weapons, they need to have a market who believe there is a threat - it makes perfect strategy as long as there is War for Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed, GM, etc etc.

Case in study: Why sell F-16 to Iraq when its people are still starving and when violance are internal ?

U.S. sells $3billion F16 deal with Iraq

Japan want int court only for dokdo island cos Korea controls it. Japan doesn't want int court for diao yu islands.

The fishing islands (Korea too) was seized by imperial Japan in 1890+.

After ww2. Japan was to return all territories. But the USA later gave the islands to Japan instead cos China was communist.

So China does have a case here.

And the US is stuck cos they are also partly responsible .

Lots of history

not only diaoyu islands

Okinawa was formerly Ryukyu Kingdom, an independent country with unique culture and language

It was annexed by Japan in the late 19th century

According to the Cairo treaty, all countries conquered by Japan between 1895 and 1945 should be freed, but USA also di siao and gave the island chains to Japan, despite the objections of the islanders themselves

basically this island conflict tell us something in an objective point of view...

- the hatred between the two countries will not be solved in another 100 years

- PRC nationalism is on the rise, and can be dangerous if go out of hand

- Japan's reluctance to admit its past mistakes will not win them friends in the East Asia

anyway in my opinion, China and Japan will not start a war, not even a sea battle, to risk their 2nd and 3rd largest economy status and growth

PRC may have some issues in its coming leader transition (Xi's mysterious disappearance?), so want to divert the attention of its people to foreign issues

these kind of political tricks are used almost everywhere, in USA, in Malaysia, etc

The reason is both S Korean and China have claimed sovereignty on not just to land but also the sea around the islands.

Since they see those island and surrounding sea as part of their territory based on historical-basis, they will argue this is a non-legal issue nor contravene any International law. Hence they reject Japan's proposal to go to ICJ.

And don't forget, Japan has similar territory dispute with Russia over the Kurile Islands although with more recent history.

Those islands were taken over by the then Soviets at the end of WW2.

When both Soviet offered to return two of the islands to Japan, Japan rejected because they regarded it too small (7%).

This dispute remains unsolved till today.

from the map...seem a bit far from China ler....how come they can claim it theirs? [laugh]

100+ years when Japan defeated Qing Dynasty in a major sea battle, Qing tried to negotiate but Japan replied arrogantly:

"两国力量相等,外交就是力量,两国力量悬殊,力量就是外交" ("when two countries are level, foreign diplomacy is strength; when one country is superior than the other, military might is diplomacy")

look like this statement still applies today, just that the two countries have switched positions

Apparently the first step in defeating the evil Japs is to beat a fellow Chinese into a coma because he drives a Toyota

7-11 and other covenience shops smashed in Chengdu. Apparently some folks ate in a Jap restaurant and whipped out the PRC flag afterwards. Shouting slogans about loving the country and being anti-Japanese, they proceed to smash the restaurant and ran off without paying.

Suddenly I am reminded of Ah Q slapping his own face to feel strong.
