Liviolow Neutral Newbie September 15, 2013 Share September 15, 2013 Its not like they don't provide this baby seat any way. I heard from a taxi driver that you can call to book a cab with the baby seat. Can tell me which company is that? Cos when I booked the operator always tell me don't have. Or are they ill informed? I normally call comfort and silver cab. But these aside I still think one is better to have enforced it fully than to disregard safety for commercial gains. It's like telling people it's dangerous to not have baby seat but as long as you are earning a living then you can don't follow. Like that I might as well apply to be a taxi driver than I can always drive my baby without baby seat right? P.S. please let me know which company have baby seats. Thanks. Comfort taxi driver told me have. He said can call. But I never tried before. Its because they are earning a living thats why they can don't follow. Even if now LTA makes it mandatory to use a baby seat in a taxi, most taxi drivers will rather just stop picking people with kids. They can probably earn more that way than having a baby seat and then having passengers reject their taxi cuz not enough space. When you drive a private car, its your own car and your child's safety is in your own hands. Same for public transport. If you think you need a baby seat then bring one along. I have seen some mothers with those kind of baby seat that attaches to a frame so it becomes a pram. That way, the mother just push the baby around and when boarding the taxi, they just detach the whole thing and put into the taxi. Yes, you sum up how regulation affect how people change their approach of doing business or job. So Ya, government understand this and thus try as much as possible not to regulate too much as end effect is it may shift problem to another curve and create another headache or make it worst. Nostalgia 4th Gear September 16, 2013 Share September 16, 2013 (edited) I think the debate here is who should decide on child seats? Parents or Government. Singapore is a paternalistic country. If you leave it to the citizens, public toilets are not flush, litter and spitting everywhere, illegal parking, etc. If you fine them, everybody complain. Children die, who is the victim? Parents. But if parents don't care, then should our government care. Same for seat belts. Government fine motorist for failing to wear seat belt. All motorist knows that seat belt save lives, but there are some who refused to put on because short journey waht, wrinkle shirt, forget, etc. Point : Self responsibility. Parents decide. If they want to take risk, go ahead. They suffer the consequences just like smoking. Smoking kills but government can only discourage through public education. As long as they don't put other road users at risk, I think live and let live. This is an individual decision. Even in the country most often quoted as 'non paternalistic', seat belt safety is a government concern: National Click It or Ticket Enforcement Edited September 16, 2013 by Nostalgia
Thejoy Neutral Newbie September 25, 2013 Share September 25, 2013 I was driving my modest Jap Sedan with my wife and 3 kids to their childcare centre in Bedok North Rd this morning. When i almost reached the childcare centre, I was surprised to see a TP Car & Bike + 3 officers blocking the left lane of a 2 lane road, leaving only the right lane to pass. I thought must be major crime. Then i found out they were catching cars with kids without child or booster seats. My conversation with the TP Officers as follow: TP: Sir, do you know that it is an offence for children below the height of 1.3m to sit in a car without child or booster seat? Me: Yes Sir, i know. TP: How many kids you have? Me: 3 in the car and 1 more at home, all below 1.3m. TP: Give me your Driving License (I passed to him and he took down my details) Me: So how am i going to drive my family out next time and I have a maid also? TP: Then you either buy another car or buy a MPV (WTF...high COE price came to my mind...). Me: Can you exercise some flexibility for my case as I can't possibly fit 4 child/booster seats into my car? TP: Sorry that's the rule. Then you should take public transport. Me: (Tu Lan now) You mean Bus or Taxi got provide Child or Booster seats? After the incident, I was quite pissed off. While our dear government is encouraging Singaporean to raise birth rate, on the other hand they come (purposely) penalise you with petty fines without offering any practical solutions! While our dear government is encouraging Singaporean to raise birth rate, on the other hand they come (purposely) penalise you with petty fines without offering any practical solutions! Tell you something... I also encountered similar situation. The only difference is that I am having conversation with a LTA guy, which is my friend wedding buddy. - The conversation started with how to bring 3 children, a driver (father) and a mother, in a normal sedan. The replied was; "you can have a booster seat, and 2 baby seats in a car, then the mother squeeze in." - Then I ask how if I have a maid; the replied, "you can choose not to bring the maid out." - Then how about if i have 4 children; the replied, "then you can choose to change car to MPV, which cater many space. Or, you can choose to ride the MRT or other public transport." - But public transport alway jam packed, bring so many children to take bus, MRT is not easy task; the replied, "you can always plan the journey ahead. And you mentioned you have a wife and a maid to help as well? for a maid to take public transport is reasonable." - But I think have private transport can save much hassle; the replied, "oh yes, that of course." - But the car is so expensive nowsdays, how to afford to change bigger car (MPV), if really to have 3 to 4 children; the replied, "hey friend, this is the basic of family planning. You cannot keep on giving birth and let the government to shoulder your burden." - But government said we need to give birth more; The replied, "that does not mean you can give birth like nobody business, and at the end of the day, could not afford this or that, and then put the blame on the government. Yes, the government wants to have high birth rate, but you have to plan according to your ability. Like let say you want to have 3 to 4 children, and you do not have the ability to have the bigger private transport, then take public transport. The very basic is planning" After the conversation, I feel that some points are quite correct, which is the ability and family planning. Dear Elfenstar, I am not flaming you. This is just my conversation experience with some of them.

There are quite a few practical solutions what. Just take the train. Nowadays most places are accessible by MRT already. Or else just make 2 trips lo. One trip to fetch your kids then after that come back to fetch your wife. Edited September 26, 2013 by Nzy
