trees along the expressways are used to reduce noise pollution as well. building knolls are too expensive and takes up more land space i guess. trees everywhere in sg has multiple uses.

Trees are great to keep the environment cooler (as a result of photosynthesis) and shadier. I thought the NEA did a fantastic job at planning what trees to grow and where to grow.. Without these trees, the drivers will be baking in the sun when driving. This almost TS needs to exercise some maturity when using the thread title and invoking thread content.. I am not in the civil sector and do feel indifferent to some local policies, but I urging netizens not to go overboard with insensitive comments..

Half to two thirds of the world's oxygen comes from plants (the other comes from single celled bacteria in oceans). If people take the NIMBY approach and care just about a fallen tree affecting the flow of their day, how would you like to suffocate from having no oxygen? If everyone said, keep the roads clear and let someone/somewhere else have the trees, where are the trees and plants going to be?

 

Oxygen is a commodity that is free.

 

So is shade, and the savings it brings you from using less air conditioning, etc.

 

Though it sounds like a science lesson, I think people forget that everything comes from the fact that plants convert the sun's energy into other things that we can use.

 

Trees are just a subdivision of the plant family and people should be grateful that it is available at no direct cost of planting, maintenance, etc.

Makinen85, on the lighter side, you may want to go a tad deeper into sustainability and rising temperatures to understand the simple facts of ecosystem...

The whole world is getting hotter each day because by simple actions such as switching on the air-con. These emitted gases (from air-con) such as carbon monxide and carbon dioxide heats up the air. There are of course many other causes like melting ice and deforestation. The world can only get hotter and it is estimated that we getting increase of 3 degrees in temperature by 2040/50 if we continue this consumption rate. Phrasing this in accessible language, these trees are one of the many ways to help to convert these emitted gases into oxygen (what we need) and keep the environment cool.

Nowadays, most of us know only one solution to increasing hot weather - make the aircon work harder.. Essentially, we are making ut internal environment (room, car, etc) feel cooler and making the outside world a hotter place by simply emitting more gases. You can think lightly of this now... You won't when we hit 40 degress in Singapore and if your air-con stop working for some reasons..

Not asking us not to use air-con but just using this as an response to Makinen85's query.

Please don't tell me you think that the solution to global warming is for everyone to turn on their air conditioning to "do their part" in cooling the world down.

 

In case you didn't know, air conditioning is simply using energy to move heat from one place to another.

 

And YES, trees can suck in CO2 which comes out of your car's exhaust pipe.

 

If you're on the road enough, you will notice motorists prefer to wait in the shade of trees at a traffic light than under direct sunlight.

trees are good for our roads. It has many other functions other then those mentioned by fellow bros here.

 

U try driving in a country along the highway when there is no tree like china, and drive in a place like USA. You can greatly see the difference. Looking at Greens while driving also makes you more relax and less tense.

 

Its all about maintaining those trees after there were planted, and not that it is wrong to decide on planting them there.
