My pocket money while in pri school wan 70 cents...considered 'rich' :D

Were you born in the very early 70s (e.g. 1971, 1972) or late 60s, if you are, then you are considered as "rich" for havng 70cents as daily allowance.

Otherwise, no. :D

Inflation sets in.

I gave a beggar 40cts from my table and he asked for $1 instead (real case).

Kids know about price too.

got people tell me ... reason they do not pick up coins is that coins are for the beggars ... so i also stopped picking up coins.

There is this other "Rags to Riches" thread in lite and easy section.

Considering my 40cent allowance many years ago, I feel like contributing my story there. :D

When I was a child, I was told those coin has black magic cast on it....but those who told me that will pick it up...cos those black magic specifically targeted at children :D :D

Early '70s. It was a rather generous allowance...but need to save the extras for other stuff like exercise books, pencils, hair cut, etc...

You need to pay for your hair-cut? Mine was sponsored by Ah Gong on separate account and not counted into the daily allowance.

And hair-cut was once a month.

Your ah gong was good. My parents dare not try.

I meant Ah Gong paid for the haricut, I stayed at my grandparents' place when I was young.

Should contribute. Actually, more people were poor in the '70's or maybe even during the '80s...but childhood was more fun and had more 'substance'. Nowadays, kids generally have more choices but not necessary more in substance.

I see. I think haircut was affordable...$2? Can't remember if my saving was enough or did my parents paid the difference.

Yeah, when I was a kid, there were 10 people staying in a 3-room HDB flat in my grandpa's house.

The floor was the cold marble type (I think so) and my relatives had to lay the wooden thin planks on the floor before they could sleep on it.

Not even foam mattress. Now you ask the kids to sleep on the floor? Haha..

But strangely, we didn't feel poor then.

You must be older than me. When I was in primary one, the cheapest soup noodle in the canteen was already 20cents.

My P1 pocket money was 40cents. But in the subsequent years, the allowance was increased to 60 cents. Thanks to Ah Gong.

i only 47 this year, where go older?
