Every year the number seem increasing, yet given lesser space and poor takeup rate by exhibitors, where they get the numbers from? [confused]

This year's Comex show came to a close on Sunday - after chalking up a record $74 million in sales.

About 835,000 visitors in total flocked to the four-day event, Singapore's largest IT and consumer electronics exhibition.

Together, they helped the show beat last year's sales tally of $73 million.

Held at Suntec Singapore, Comex 2012 took up 330,000 sq ft of exhibition space. It was organised by Exhibits Inc, a subsidiary of The Straits Times' parent company Singapore Press Holdings.

Did 835,000 people really attend COMEX 2012?

See this The Straits Times article about COMEX 2012: 835,000 people in four days. In a Singapore trade show. In two relatively small halls.

I cannot understand how these numbers were calculated. Firstly, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), America's biggest consumer tradeshow, hosts about 135K people from all over the world. The area of that show is about what... more than ten times the size of COMEX? And we have 835,000 local visitors?

Also, COMEX is held on level 4 and 6 of Suntec City. Each level is about 12,000 square meters, which makes it 24,000 square meters for both levels. Assuming that two-thirds of the space is used for display, structures, (which is a GROSS underestimation) there remains 8,000 square meters available for people to walk around in to be packed like sardines.

Assuming that each person needs 0.5 square meters, to be totally packed like sardines, 16,000 people can be in the COMEX show at any one time. Of course, each exhibitor has promoters, or exhibition booth staff, and they have 800 exhibitors. Just assuming there are eight booth staff per exhibitor on the average (again, gross underestimation)--they are permanently stationed there--that takes away 6,000 people per turn, giving a possible 10,000 visitors in Comex at any one time.

COMEX runs four days, 9 hours each day, for a total 36 hours (2,160 minutes). For 835,000 people to attend COMEX, the 10,000 people have to be changed 83 times, so that 835,000 people can take their turn to be on the floor. (835,000 / 10,000 = 83 )

That means, everybody spent 26 minutes (2,160 minutes / 83 turns) in the show. Which is nonsense. 26 minutes in that type of crowd density won't get you 26 metres into the show.

What I would think is that the average person spends 2 hours in the show. That means, 18 turns of people (36 hours divided by 2). At 10,000 people per turn, that means, 180,000 people attended the show. (10,000 x 18 turns). Which is still very high, but a more credible figure.

I would really like to see the method used to count numbers at COMEX, and audited figures. Because COMEX 2012 is still an incredible trade show, with tons of people with great spending power descending on 24,000 square meters of show retail space. Because companies pay gadzillions of dollars to be there--better numbers make better planning. Money is to be made, and the crowd is definitely there, all looking for great deals, but better quality of numbers will serve business better, with better insight into consumer patterns to improve on the consumer experience as well as product selection.

I'm not a maths wiz. Anybody with better mathematics and statistics talents than me, please comment, thanks!

Think they wanted to attract more companies to participate in IT show the nex time..

73m sales also bit suspect..coz items they sell also not costly kind..from few cents to few thousands?

180,000 ppl attended SG Grand Prix. 60,000 each day x 3. It's the same 60,000. Same for Comex.

ppl like to use with stats to present the facts. u see that in politics a lot. GDP increase by how many pct. We are the richest in the world. Just think a bit more and can know what the stats really mean.

The sales figure of $73,000,000 can very well by only an estimate...

just by looking at the size and the exhibitors, i doubt how they get the figures.

Last year they had all the floor (vs this year only 2 floor), last year they sell led/led tv (those hourly lelong) like hot cake.

This year, half the space on 6th floor sell credit cards, credit card got sales figure meh? or they use the applicant annual income as sales figures!

I was also thinking the same, very suspicious. I actually did not have problem parking around the marina area on saturday and sunday afternoon to evening. Usually the car park lots there will all be packed. Nowadays got so many of these type of sales, not just the "big four".
